Hi Petite Poulet,
I know of many people who use garlic to worm their birds and as a general immune stimulant. However, I have never seen any scientific studies anywhere that support the claim that garlic kills worms in any species - it is all anecdotal evidence or testimonials.

I for one would not want to rely solely on garlic to ensure my flock was worm- free. Having said that, if you wanted to use it as suggested by Zach in between wormings then I see no harm in this. Excessive levels of garlic can cause blood clotting problems but this is unlikely to occur in backyard flocks, unless each bird is fed a whole bulb daily!!!!

Apple cider vinegar acts to acidify the gut, helps promote colonization of normal gut bacteria and discourages yeast and other fungi from growing in the gut. If you are going to use it make sure you get the organic type which is unpasteurised and unfiltered-it is by far the most effective form.

As for registered wormers, I prefer the levamisole based wormers such as Nilverm over piperazine solutions as I find they are more effective. Otherwise ivermectin-based ( as suggested by Poultry Doc) or even better moxidectin-based wormers, some of which also contain a tapewormer, are quite effective as are some of the "white drenches" or benzimidazoles such as Panacur. However, none of these are actually registered for use in poultry so you use them at your own risk- even though many people have used them without ill effect in these birds.

Hi, Parvo,

Thank you for all your information. We only have a little local stockfeed, but will enquire if they can get the other worming products in, otherwise will have to travel to the next town.

I guess that garlic like onions thin the blood stream. Apple Cider Vinegar makes a great hair rinse too! I know this is off the topic, but can it be used diluted and sprayed on chooks to add sheen to their feathers?

Thanks again, it is great how people share their knowledge and experience on this forum!

Our vet recommended Nilverm at the start of 2009 and we have had no problems since then so for us seems to do the trick I just wonder should treatment be rotated to avoid resistance or is that not a problem with worms?

Resistance is potentially a real problem with poultry worms, particularly Capillaria ( hairworm or threadworm).

Nilverm has been a good poultry wormer for years. Moxidectin Plus as suggested by Callum is an excellent alternative but please remember that it is NOT registered for use in poultry, so the manufacturer assumes no responsibility for its use in poultry. There are always potential legal issues surrounding the use of non-registered products on food producing species ( eg poultry) but in reality most hobby breeders use these products anyway.

Yes, Mornie, rotating drenches is probably a good idea.

My personal preferance is 1) Either Nilverm or Avitrol plus- the latter also treats tapeworms but these are not usually a big issue in poultry
2) Moxidectin or Moxidectin Plus- also treats mites or 3) worm-out gel; all 3 of these have totally different groups of chemical wormers as their base so if you rotate between them you are less likely to build up resistance.

Remember, it is a waste of time worming during rainy periods unless you do them direct to beak as the birds won't drink the medicated water.
Avoid medications of any sort during extremely hot weather when increased water consumption may cause overdosing.

There are also some discussions on the the "Health Knowledge Base" subforum eg
