I too use the plastic numbers clip rings for all my fowl including chickens, pheasants and peafowl. I for one like the idea of a national leg ring register and think its a good start to a national body

i think the idea sux as we have enough rising cost ...for someone who may breed 100's of chicks every yr and buying that many rings would be sillynot everyone wants to join breed clubs either

I will fence sit as I see both points of view but for breeding at least the rings are a good idea

As you have read earlier I am adamantly against a permanent and mandatory system of legs rings etc, no need to re-affirm that now.
I have to agree that some system of identification is essential in a serious breeding programme of purebred anything, be it poultry or some other species.
I toe punch at hatch, no mistakes then as the fowls carry that ID for life, with only 16 possibilities it is limiting to identifying chicks of that seasons breeding.
There after I use leg rings (either coloured or numbered) and coloured cable ties to identify individuals for a specific purpose and/or quick recognition.I have to hand some numbered wing tags ( of a safety pin type, displayed earlier in this post by another contributor) which I have used and which can be easily removed for show and replaced on the fowls returning home.I have also in the past used the small aluminium numbered tags similar to what are applied to sheep ears.
I have to admit I have a photographic memory and on sight recognise every fowl on the place as an individual, if you know and study your fowls it is not difficult.
Even a pen of say 20 white leghorn hens, you can recognise every one as no two fowls are identical there are always subtle differences to the observant eye.
My point is it is up to the individual to use and impliment a system that best suits thier needs and situation, not be dictated to as to how we go about our chosen hobby and interest.

I just use coloured zip ties cheap and they last ages

I like the idea of the leg rings because if I buy a bird from someone I can be sure they bred it if not I can trace who did and maybe get more from them. I can also be sure of the bird’s age and I do believe it would also help the good breeders sell more birds as the buyers can be sure of what they are buying. My grandfather had pigeons and they all had leg rings and he used to say it was the best idea the club had done as he could sell and buy with confidence.

I have heard some clubs are finally talking about introducing metal leg rings and a bantam club may trial it soon woohoo4
