canned tuna is very good or dried tuna, rice is also good and bread products will also assist. Look for foods with high protein. Are you feeding whole dried corn?

her leg is limp but its due to the lack of nutrition. She is 1.8kgs. Cheers, Rita

The limp will be from muscle softening which is not uncommon with histomoniasis it should improve if her overall condition improves. The most important factor now is she must continue to eat as her body fat reserves will be low or depleted and in turn her immune system will be weak. The rice is excellent for this and if you can add a small amount of bread product would also help and boiled egg yolk would also assist.

Rita,

If it is Blackhead, then you can get a prescription (ie. a note on letterhead) from a vet and take it to BEC feed ingredients at Carole Park in Brisbane and they can supply Emtryl. It is a very inexpensive drug.

Note that use of Emtryl in feed or water of birds or animals used for human consumption has been withdrawn by the APVMA. My reading of the vast swathes of literature pertaining to the withdrawl is that the drug was released a long time ago (50+ years I think) at a time when the standard tests they now use prior to approval of a drug were not available. No company wants to front the costs to do these tests as Emtryl is well-out of patent. I was unable to find a clear statement as to what risk the authorities thought Emtryl posed however. Does anyone know?

In any event, absolutely avoid supplying it to stock used for human consumption either directly or as eggs.

Andrew

wow, I didnt know all this.... I rang everywhere trying to find emetryl, not a chance in hell I could find it. The vet did say that metrogyl comes from the same family emetryl comes from... I dont know what to accept as truth, EMETRYL has been around a long time, is the new stuff better or worse or the same....?

Cant tell how frustrated I am with this situation.

What would you do? She is improving now,I noticed her poos.... it looks like it should, bit of white and dark and big lumps.

back to the kitchen and cook some more rice!

Hi Rita,
Emtryl is still available by prescription. Your vet should be able to order it in for you or write you a script as Andrew has stated.
It is an older drug. It has been quite effective in the past but its main drawback is a narrow safety margin- meaning that on hot days when birds are likely to drink more there is an increased risk of toxic side effects. Usually the birds appear unsteady on their feet and may fall over.
There have also been some resistance issues latley with some parasites- moreso canker in pigeons than blackhead in peafowl.
The legislation is becoming stricter with all drugs used for poultry due to the food residue issue and cost of testing. That is one reason why sulfaquin is no longer available.

Now to answer your question. Dose of emtryl for blackhead: 500mg dimetridazole per Litre drinking water fresh daily for 3-6 days, then 250 mg dimetridazole per litre of drinking water daily. Treat birds for 12 days in total.

The concentration of the dimetridazole ( the active ingresdient) is 400 mg per gram powder, so you need to use 1.25 grams of powder ( loosely 1/4 teaspoon) per Litre drinking water for the first 3-6 days, then 1/4 teaspoon per 2 litres drinking water for the rest of the treatment period.

Hope this helps.
