Rooster silencer

Just wondering has anyone got a solution to keeping roosters quite in a suburban area, any ideas would be appreciated.

Some people use rooster boxes which they keep their roosters in over night and until its a reasonable time in the morning.
They often crow quite a lot when first let out though.

If you use the search function at the top of the screen and type in "rooster box" (with the inverted commas) you'll get some older threads talking about using and making them.

You might have to go to a different forum or search the www for more info though, because I could only find half a dozen threads on the subject.

You would want to consider if your council allows roosters in suburbia or if your neighbours are going to be affected too.
If you have any neighbours who are shift workers wanting to sleep through the day they may not appreciate a crowing rooster. Good luck with getting it sorted :-D

you could always not have one , an just buy fertile eggs ,

saye he who has 9 crowing from bout 3am till , well all day , [smilie=a_doh.gif]

but then you miss out on mating an breeding you own , i dont have to use them living on a farm , but rooster boxes seem the way to go , knowen a few that use them , warning they all have said what works for one dont mean will for another [smilie=a_chuckle.gif]

We gave our rooster to a friend on the promise that we'll get fertilized eggs whenever we need them. I know in Townsville, roosters aren't allowed in suburbia.

They need to stand up tall to crow, so like the others said, if they are in something where they cant stretch up, they shouldn't crow.

Have you ever heard the word crow bar. Well the origin of the word comes from the use of a bar set above the perch to stop the cock bird from standing up at full stretch to let rip with a full bodied crowing. Instead you get a bit of a flapping of wings and then boingggg followed by oww.

Thank you for all the replies. I have a friend who is allowed roosters on his 9 acre farm so I can ask him if I could house him there. How do they go travelling back and forth it’s about 40 mins away? When is the best time of year to bring him back to my place? How long should I leave him here to get fertile eggs? Sorry for all the questions

I don't know about what time of year is best, i'd say in the spring after they have molted?

We move our birds at night if we can. Because they are sleepy, they don't fret as much. My friend lives about that distance too, and we've moved birds dozens of times no prob.

I understand, the rooster needs to be in the pen for about 10 days to 2 weeks before the eggs are consistently fertile, so after that... depends on how many eggs you need.

In some ways it would be good if we could stop a rooster from crowing but a surgical procedure that way we could all have a rooster and breed more chickens but without all the hassles. I can’t have any roosters here not even for a day.
