My new Leghorn cockerel

I bought an awesome Leghorn cockerel from a breeder North-West of here via Ian. Thanks Ian. I really appreciate it. Please feel free to share additional info on here about this particular cockerel and where he came from...if appropriate.

I am supposed to have five Leghorn pullets that are 16 weeks old. They are included in the video that is currently uploading to YouTube.

Ian suggested I see if I can buy a nice pullet or two from Clive if I have any reservations about the quality of my pullets. Sounds like a brilliant idea and maybe I will. Despite some of the bravado I exercise on here, I'm actually very shy. I'm a little hesitant to knock on Clive's door and introduce myself.

I was discussing this with a friend this afternoon as I had discussed it with myself yesterday. As soon as I put the boy in the pen with the two cross breed "meat" cockerels, he started doing the dance and I thought I was going to see something X-rated. :oops:

I wondered to myself if I should put one of my Australorp pullets in with him. But, if I do, and I produce Leghorn X Australorp chickens, then what? Are they easy to sell? Will they look silly? But, the biggest point I came back to was "Why?" "Why produce ANY of these? Every Leghorn/Australorp egg could have been a pure Australorp!"

Any thoughts? Is it a cross worth doing, even if only to confirm the new boy is fertile?

Hello Greenaus i haven't watched the video yet (i will in a minute) but if your Leghorn cockerel is white the x with an Australorp should turn out alright(white). I did it last year because i read some were that this is an old commercial x that they used for egg production. Will try to find the pictures of this and the ugly one were i used an Australorp cockerel with white Leghorn hens. :-?

They used a white leghorn over a black Australorp to make a russian breed (I think thats where it is) called a Potchefstroom Koekoek, most white Leghorns have the barring gene in them. You could get some interesting looking birdies! Could be the start of a barred Australorp! :lol:
