Greenaus has Muscovy Ducks

You just want proof of life so you know I didn't eat them.

I'll go and take a photo now. It is really hard to get a front on picture because they don't go come toward me.

Same dam, different locations and camera angle.

Maybe I'll try later tonight. I plan to be down that way trimming a few vent feathers on the Australorps, so I might try to sneak into the duck enclosure and get a photo or two while they're half asleep.

A bigger, better photo of Daffy has been uploaded and should appear in the photo gallery after it has been approved.

When I first went down to them today with some bread, there were a couple of common brown ducks in the dam a few metres from Daffy and about a metre from Daisy who were both on land. They must have been having a duckscussion. The brown ones flew away when I turned up.

Yes.

Based on what I've read, Daisy should begin laying in Spring (probably August here in the Lockyer Valley), lay between 10 and 20 eggs, then sit, then hatch out and raise the ducklings.

If I let nature take its course, she'll only get one lot laid, hatched and raised before the next off season.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I now have an order in for mussies. The pekins were to bloody noisy and the runners to stupid and skittish.

Hopefully the mussies will be a lot better behaved.I know there is a duck species for me that won't annoy the crap out of me and the neighbours :-D

b&p, am confident you will not be dissapointed with the Muscovy

muscovys are the best breed around neighbours, i have had my muscovys were i am now for the last 10 years, and i live in town, you will find there a lot cleaner than othere breeds also, all i do is move there water containers to a different part of there yard everyday and give there yard a rake , and you will find there is no smell or work to do, they are very easy to keep, also i run my birds on sand, every shed has a layer of sand, also i spread if all over there run keeps everything nice and dry, i even use it in there nest boxes, all my nestboxes have no bottom in them, i simply make a small hollow in the ground for the eggs to sit in, then sprinkle with a small amount of sand , i find it works alot better than useing straw and a nice and cleen , also i dont use straw in there sheds as the birds do better on sand, i hope this has givin you some ideas to try ?

Charlie I know you wont eat them. I just thought a frontal would be cool.
I just love my birds. Those two were part of a clutch of 13 out of 14 eggs. Not bad eh?
I know they will be looked after well by you. Give them time to get used to you and they will come to you soon enough especially when you bribe them with something each day.

B&P you cant get anything any quieter than mussies. You hardly hear them.
