Geese v Foxes

Is it true that geese keep foxes away from your chooks?
If so, do you need to keep them in the same pen as the chooks or can you leave them wander around the yard?

Hi there,
I,m not too sure geese will keep the foxes away from your chooks.I know a fox will attack a sitting goose with goslings and kill the goslings and possibly the goose as well.I wouldn't rely on one or several geese to look after my chooks.I would invest in a Memarana dog to protect your flock.

Hi there, I agree with Rose. I had dogs (other people's) and lastly a fox get my ducks and one of my ganders. They struck at night when the birds were sleepy. No contest.

Hi Shona, We agree with Rose and Duckie, but there is always the exception to the rule and there are stories of foxes fleeing across a paddock with a king goose in hot pursuit :-D

My geese alert me if there is something around that shoudn't be but they don't have a good defence especially against a fox.

Not many birds do, foxes have eaten a couple of our baby lambs over the last 2 years. I wish the local govt would do more to get rid of them.

Our epa tried baiting them but they had complaints so they stoped :evil:

at least they offer traps to help.

i remember on the farm ,we had a gander that would attack dogs or anyone that went near him or his mate, he was so savage he took on a ute , but the ute won

Some are quite fearless and that can be their down fall, especially taking on a Ute!!

they make great alarms and let you know if you have visitors :-D

That's so sad Jase

We ended up getting a pair of geese. They are both quite tame so I don't think they will do much about the foxes but they still make good pets. Our dog, Meg, (who is supposed to be a sheep dog) loves to run circles around the chooks and geese. They get a bit nervous, but just waddle away.
