Quail Breeds

Hi Everyone,
After I get back from my big month long camping trip in March, I'm going to buy a trio of quails. At this stage anyway.

But what breed should I get?

I mainly want them for their eggs, but seeing as though the male is there I will definitely try to breed them and eat the 'leftovers'.

Also I live in the middle of Brisbane, on quite a large leafy block and I already have 2 chooks, but they're very quiet. I have one set of neighbours that are close next door (our landlords son btw), the block behind us is vacant, and the block on the other side is vacant but will be built on in the next 6 months. So noise is an issue, but not a major one.

I looked up quails on youtube but there isn't much there. I did hear a bobwhite call though and it was beautiful and would blend right in with the wildlife here and I don't think it would be a nuisance.
I have read that the jap quails can have quite a harsh call...?

So what would you recommend for good egg laying and breeding, and nice sounding call, or quiet bird.

Japs are big and good for eggs. They can be a bit loud, My mail use to yell like a mini rooster because he had no mate but then I put him next to the other pair and now they are all quite. However if you put 2 mails together they fight thats why I keep them seperated.

your best bet would probably be Japanese quails. they are a highly productive quail that can lay up to 200-300 eggs a year apparently. if you are going to get Japanese quails PM(private message) me and i can send contact details of a breed in South Brisbane near me.

Hi japanese quail are the best for your needs

although you will need an incubator and/or a breed of chicken that is most likely going to go brood because the broodiness has been bred out of most quails.

you can also use pigeons to sit on their eggs

but that means another aviary to build/buy.

My japs lay eggs and roll them around, Do pigons go broody eazy?

i house my raceing pigeons with the jap quails and there fine togeather
Pigeons dont go broody like chooks they take turns(cock and hen) sitting on the eggs and raise there young you just need to take the quail eggs away when they are piping and put them into a brooder.
and pigeons breed very easy.

OH gawsh... I don't think my boyfriend will appreciate you guys telling me to buy pigeons now too. hehehehe. :-P

Although I have finally convinced him on the quails. Yay!

btw, what category of bird do quails fall under. I mean they're not poultry, so what are they?
