Hi there, moving to acreage near Jimboomba in the next couple of weeks and am looking for anything and everything to start stocking it with a few of each - geese, ducks, bantams & guinea fowl etc. Have yet to source & purchase them.

I need everything for poultry basically, as I'm starting from scratch.

I'm also after an Aviary for a parrot that must have heavy duty wire. I can snake & mouse proof if it's not already.

Alternatively, I would happily talk to someone who'd be keen to build a couple of coops inexpensively i.e. I'd buy the piping, galv iron, wire etc. from a local 2nds building yard and we could discuss your cost to build.

Thanks, Dianne

Hello Dianne,

How did you go with supplies and birds.
I have 3 geese (all girls) 1 grey 2 white for sale.
2 are from last years and one the year before.
I am also looking to sell a couple of Muscovey drakes and ducks. POA.

Let me know if interested. I am near Grantham.
You can PM me if you rather.

Val

Hi Val, thanks so much for the response! I was just sitting here frustrated that my poor, lone inherited goose doesn't have any mates!

I got all excited until I saw where you were, there's no way I'd make it out there but I'd snap those 3 girls up lickety split if I could. I don't suppose there's any chook transporters that go between you & Park Ridge?

Cheers, Di

Hello Di,
I wish I knew.
If you advertise you might find someone who is going your way from Toowoomba.
Just let me know when and if you can.
I am not in a hurry and I know we have until July/August until breeding time comes around.
I reallly don't want 30 goslings this year to chase into their respective cages at night.
What a thing that was.
I had 3 geese on the nest in the run. They were in dog crates. I also had 3 geese outside the run with their nests.
I only lost 3 goslings to nature and birds. I sold the other 27. Thank goodness.
I have too many drakes again. Muscoveys. Blue, brown and whites.
Val

Hi Val,

I read your reply in a blur of blinding terror when reading about the number of goslings you had. Good lord, what have I got myself into??? A local chap who's done it really tough in the drought delivered his beautiful flock of 7 stunning geese to me because he couldn't cope with them living on dry dusty soil & a dried up damn so now I have 8 including my old "inherited" gander.

I also got 6 x gorgeous Indian Runners (1 believes he's a goose & will not hang out with the other Runners) and a whole heap of other poultry at a local sale so I'm fully set up now & will probably be exploding at the seams if they all breed as yours did, yikes!!!

You can control the numbers of hatchlings.
I take out the older eggs and eat them. Or sell them.
I mark them as they are laid with a date.
If the girl objects I just grab her by the neck so that she cant bit and pull her out bodily.
Watch out for her wings as they use them to hit you with if so that you don't touch their eggs.
What do you actually have. How many ganders to geese. take some pics so that we can all go ooooh! so nice. ;)
Geese will lay every second day until they are happy with the number.
Gooood luck.

Gulp .... grab a goose by the neck, moi? Surely you jest, woman! I'd rather deal with a rearing stallion with hooves flailing & teeth gnashing.

The "inherited gander" is just plain white. The new additions colouring look like pilgrims to me but I'd love to take some pics and have you tell me what the heck they are.

I'm gutted & fretting tonight - my buff Mrs Frizzle, my fave of all, and a stunning, stunning hen is MIA - their run was closed this evening (because the Runners sneak in & steal food, & she took herself off to roost outside - I found Mr Frizzle up on a brick bbq, but no sign of her anywhere. T'was only her 2nd day of freedom so I'm worried as all get out. I just pray the geese & alpacas will keep predators at bay until first light when I'll be out there calling the little cow. If I've lost her, I'll be a mess.

I understand how you feel. I lost little chooka after she decided she had been on her own for too many years. She was scared of the roosters I had and gotten rid of.
She used to sleep on top of the cocky cage in a cat travel box. She would follow me around hoping for a treat and I had her for over 8yrs. She just disappeared one day. I still miss her.
When she realised there was only one rooster there she stayed in the run and slept in her crate on top of the nesting box. If I had kept her where she was I would still have her.

When you have goslings lock them up at night with mum. If you don't you won't have many left. I use food to lure them into the coup. I also have a large stick in each hand to round them up. Geese are relatively easy to round up if you train them and they also will get used to being locked up at night if you use food to teach them.
Don't keep the babies, sell them to stop inbreeding.

I do hope that you have found your Mia. Consider hanging or putting the chook food up higher than the ducks can reach. I put my seed up during the day so my ducks don't eat it all, also the geese absolutely demolish it as well. I control what and how much they have of seed otherwise it costs a fortune to keep up with them. Just put it up on a nest box or on a chain. Then feed them some at night. Just a thought. ;)
