RAT AND MOUSE CONTROL - ULTRASONIC?

Hi everyone,

I guess we aren't alone but we have had mice and rats (yuck!!!) in our shed again for a month or so now. :evil:

I used to leave those packet baits under all the hay bales in the shed, but now the chooks go in there I have to be more careful with what I use as bait (and also can't just set traps willy nilly!).

I've found one brand of mouse bait that has lockable "stations" where the bait is hidden inside a plastic box, but there is no way a rat can reach it either, only small mice.

Has anybody tried one of those ultrasonic rodent deterrents that is supposed to chase mice and rats away but not annoy birds? If they work they sound like they would be perfect for our shed.

I keep all of the extra chicken feed in bins with lids, but there is always hay around, and I also worry that the horrible little critters get into the chooks' feed bowls at night. Does anyone take full feeders out at night to stop this?

The first time I lifted the back seat out of the Sigma we bought back in 96 there was a family of mice with babies nesting in the hay/straw/fibres type stuff under the seat.

If living in a crappy Mitsubishi doesn't deter rodents, nothing will. ;-)

I now nothing about the Ultrasonic, but with my feeders i hang them from the roof with electrical wire just low enough for the chooks to reach but to high for the rats and mice. Also if the rats can reach the containers swing making it hard for them to feed

i too have a big problem i saw a huge rat eating my young pigeon that fell from the nest they eat the grains that are left over i use traps but not bait.

Buy a whippet all of you, have got 3 and any mice or rats that are around dont last long with these little sight hounds getting around :lol:

Although one of the little buggers tends to go for the odd stray bird as well :shock:

Do you mean they eat the odd bird as in chook, or flying wild bird?

I think we've stopped our Australian Shepherds trying to eat our chooks (where's their protective, herding instinct??????) They have killed the odd rat that has ventured into their yard, but I am pretty sure the rats must have been on their last legs already.

ill tell a story about the rats around here
a mate came around with his highpower air rifle (shoots trew 10mm chip board)we were in the shed and we saw one i shot it in the gut,it fell i shot it again ,then we picked it up put it on a chair.it was still breathing so we hsot it again point blank almost in the gut again then again,then went for more rats came back and its font half head and font legs was sittting up staring at us then we finished it off with a head shot
just shows how stong they really are.

It's amazing how much some creatures can withstand.

I remember shooting toads point blank with a .22 one night right outside the door where we were holidaying in my early teens. There were no toads there the next morning.

Though, not all are as tough and not all bullets are as weak. I remember taking out pigs and kangaroos with dad's SKS from hundreds of metres away. One shot, one kill. (Ok, maybe half a dozen shots until one actually made contact).

Back to the topic...have you come to a decision yet, Deb?

I did a bit of handyman work in a school during the school hols once, and there was a plugged in and running electronic pest control device there. The mice ran over it back and forth to get to where they wanted to go. I asked the man in charge of our work about it, and he said a pest control company had sold it to them. In answer to your question, NO they do not bother mice at all.

I use a simple two litre soft drink tub and cut a three sided door/flap into it. Bait it up with some good healthy seed in a place where chooks and wild birds cannot get to it. After the good seed has gone, bait with that "blue dyed oats" poison. There is an excellent design available somewhere that deploys some PVC downpipe and fittings, which can be situated along the walls of the chook house. I will try to find the link for you.
