Yeah true,

I got 3 babies and I think I have 3 boys! :(

The feathers are now coming through quite well on most and so far there is only one definite girl and a maybe on another. The rest look like boys . So I might end up with a 7 - 1 split the wrong way . :-? . Means I'll have to buy another batch of eggs and get even more boys or find someone who is selling some girls which is a bit harder. One is not enough for me to start my own little flock.

I'm not sure what I have. I thought mabe 3 boys to start with, as their legs seem thick for little chickens, but then I look at Clara their mother and she has thick legs for a chook.

So now one of them has quite advanced wing feathers than the other 2 and I'm not sure if that the difference a day makes as I'm pretty sure this one came out on the Tuesday & the other two came out on the Wednesday.

I don't know, I'm so confused conf665

Anyway I think/hoping that I have one female & maybe the other two that aren't feathering as fast are the boys.

You got some photos you can post of your definite girl & one of the boys to show us the difference, please Drek? :-D

I will post my updated photos of my little ones as well to get opinions.

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

The high male hatch rate may be because the gene pool was too closely related.

The sex distinction between Wheaten cockerels and pullets is possible from the plumage appearance, as the pullets have a wheaten color with a very light underside, and the cockerels are blackish with an underside which is red, sometimes some red spots on the breast.

So 7 - 1 it is. Bit of a bugger that. Either find someone with some Marans Pullets which do seem in short supply around here or I take a chance on some more eggs . Of course that will mean even more cockerels that I would have to get rid of.

oh they are lovely, even if you do have mostly boys :-D

Well I took my photos and saw a lady who breeds Speckled Sussex and she killed my dreams by telling me all my babies were boys! [smilie=a_doh.gif]

Not to worry. Now I just have to find someone willing to take them.

I'd like to get them away from Clara as soon as possible so she can get some condition back and maybe lay some more eggs to incubate and have another go.

Cheers

Would Clara be terribly upset if you took her babies away? Would she have post hatching depression?

I must add that she did say that she may be wrong so I still hold a small hope that one of them is a girl

I believe she would PP so I will have to act pretty quickly to get the cluckiness out of her and make sure she continues to eat and put some condition on.

Can always hope. I may have to change my assessment. The "runt of the litter" has been feathering up a lot slower than the others and there is some chance it is actually a girl. Probably another few days before I can be sure. I guess thats the good thing with the Wheaten Marans you can tell by 3 weeks or sooner what you have.
