Growth on Clyde's eye

Just a few thoughts

Is the lump changing in size
Does it smell
any more crusty stuff about it

Nope not changing in size, which sort of worries me as I'd really like it to go down, but not increase in size so I don't know if no change is good or bad. conf665

No smell, but I suppose it would if it was infected & there was oozing of some sort

No crusty stuff. There was a bit yesterday but not today, which I thought was weird.

Why, what are your thoughts there barnsey :?:

Did you have someone helping you with Clyde's case, as I really need all the help I can get for this one.

Hi Chicka-Dee,
I don't think any eye drops are going to help in this case.
I understand your reluctance to lance the eye. I can't even guarantee you what you will find when you do, as good as your photos are (thanks [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

. There's no substitute for seeing it yourself!

In an ideal world you'd take it to the vet to do using local anaesthetic eye drops & the right tools.
If this isn't feasible, then you can do it yourself. What you need is to have someone to hold the bird and its head steady.
Try to hold the lump betweeen your thumb and forefinger. Use a sterile scalpel blade or similar & try to cut along the growth's surface, cutting deep enough to get inside. Obviously be very careful not to cut yourself!
If you can avoid the blood vessels, even better. Don't worry if it bleeds- it should stop reasonably quickly-apply some pressure with some gauze, tissues, whatever you have.
After cutting, try to squeeze out whatever you find inside. Try wiping it clean with cotton tips;it would also be worth flushing the wound with salty water or saline.

If you have some eye ointment handy you can then squeeze it over the wound.

If you are game to have a go then let us know how things turn out.

All good useful information and if I had the guts, balls or gumption to do any of that I'd follow your instructions to the letter but I'm a bigger chicken than Clyde. I'm just missing the feathers.

I'm leaving things be for now & just watching him closely and checking on him several times a day to see how it's going. If it gets bigger I might have to grow a pair and do what you suggest, but for now I'm just praying it will go down.

I hope someone up there is listening to me cause cutting into my baby just gives me the yips.

I am ringing the lady I spoke of the other day today ( just don't like ringing people on a Sunday()

I asked those questions just in case she asked them

my thought last night was maybe a tumour ( benign I hope )
been reading my chicken health handbook ( the book did give me a fright first time I read it a few weeks ago)

but a tumour is what seemed to ne what was sounding like from the books pov

also going to read more of the book
will keep you informed of what info I find out

Ok Update for you Chicka-Dee

I have just rung her and she was happy to help

Sigh of relief the growth (abscess ) is not life threating
This is a common prob chooks can some times get a abscess near one eye or the other

Clyde must have gotten some thing poked there
The hole and the first bit of crusty stuff was the start of drainage.
And it will drain on its own over a little time

The head shaking means that its annoying him a bit

One question that was asked was is he in pain with it?

If not just leave it alone

the only thing to do is watch and wash in plain water no salt for salt will affect the eye.

I totally understand your reluctance to do anything. It's not for the feint-hearted!
I don't agree with Yas's friend that it will drain on its own, unless it is very fresh. Once abscesses in birds are more than a few days old they tend to go hard and won't drain but need to be cut out.

Most eye flushes that are used to flush human and animal eyes are saline flushes ie they contain salt. You are correct that if the salt concentration is too high it will irritate the eye, but normal saline eye flushes from the chemist are fine.

Birds with painful eyes tend to squint a lot. If she isn't squinting then it's probably not sore.
