I believe its all about age and the end of their laying life so to speak

They are not cysts but are mummified eggs (shell-less) that consist of concentric rings of mummified yolk material possibly combined with some lining tissue of the oviduct.

You can see the concentric rings in the picture where the egg is cut through the middle.

It is the result of faulty egg development which can occur with a damaged/infected uterus, or one that is not functioning properly due to age.

These can then lead to egg yolk peritonitis as the mummified egg can sit in the oviduct ("uterus") and stop other eggs from developing normally- some of these are pushed backward and emerge from the opening of the uterus closest to the ovary ( This is known as the infundibulum).

The mummified eggs themselves don't always cause a problem, but they can stop the passage and development of other eggs which can cause problems.

Well!

No sooner have we been talking about this nasty affliction then my old girl Priscilla (Plymouth Rock) pops one out in front of me in the pen the other day.

It wasn't egg shape looking like the original picture of the original post, in fact it was all weirdly shaped so who knows what's going on inside of Priscillas oviduct.

I'll post a photo of it shortly, but it is still a whole level of gross.

Poor Priscilla, I do hope this doesn't cause any further problems for the poor girl.

Thanks Chicka, yes you're so right :-D

'Cilla was a bit lethargic today.

She just sat at the gate of the yard and didn't move for ages. :-?

Yesterday she laid a soft egg so I'm not sure if she's having a few internal problems that are causing her a bit of grief.

She has good colour in her crest & lovely yellow legs but she's just gone a bit "off" is the best word I can think of.

Will be keeping an eye on here over the next few days to see how she goes.

I have a gander that lays fart eggs 2 or 3 times a year but the rest are normal eggs and usually fertile

This was no fart egg. Ive seen a few fart eggs, but wasnt sure who the culprit was of those but would have most likely been Priscilla.

This is what she pooped out, and of course I had to disect it to see if it was what this post was talking about.

Definitely not as egg like looking as those others which makes me wonder even more what she's got going on in there conf665

That still looks like a mummified egg to me Chicka-Dee; they don't all look like eggs but can come in all manner of weird shapes. However, they all tend to have rounded edges and when sliced appear to consist of layers of material laid down.
They also feel "rubbery" and often smell but not always.

Definitely better out than in!
