French Wheaten Marans

Looking for information on French Wheaten Marans.

How many eggs should I expect in a year?
Do they go broody regular?
Are they placid?

Would I be able to mix them with other chooks?

I don't have any Marans but that doesn't stop me from coveting them :lol:

There is a great website on them (see below), also one of our other members (that's you Petite Pullet) has them and speaks very fondly of them.

About 150 ish a year they do lay in winter very placid they do Ok with other breeds around but the roosters are very randy and give the hens a hard time.
some lines aren't as hardy as others.
I have had a couple go broody but are supposed to be a non broody breed.

Marans have the softest of feathers and the gentlest of temperaments. They don't lay many eggs and don't go broody.

BREED: Marans

DESCRIPTION: They are known as "the hens that lay James Bond's favourite eggs" and lay various shades of deep chocolate coloured eggs, which even have a colour scale that rates from 1-9. They have bright orange eyes

HISTORY/ORIGINS:Marans originated in the swampy, marshy western French town of Marans near La Rochelle. They were developed from a number of breeds including Barred Rock, Coucou de Malines, Croad Langshan, Faverolles, Rennes ,Gatinaise and perhaps Braekel.

BREED COLOURS: Cuckoo, Golden Cuckoo, Black, Birchen, Black Copper, Wheaten, Black-tailed Buff, White and Columbian
BREED PURPOSE: Dual Purpose with large chocolate coloured eggs and fine quality meat.
BREED SIZE: STANDARD
BREED TEMPERAMENT/SUITABILITY: Marans are very quiet, gentle, docile and social birds. For the discerning owner.
HEIGHT/WEIGHT OF COCKEREL/PULLET HEN/ROOSTER
Cockerel: 3.0 to 3.5 kilos
Pullet: 2.2 to 2.6 kilos

Cock: 3.5 to 4.0 kilos
Hen: 2.6 to 3.2 kilos

BROODINESS: Average
FERTILITY: Average
COMB: SINGLE
EGG PRODUCTIVITY: 160-200 per annum
EGG SIZE/WEIGHT: Large; 65 grams for pullet 70-80 grams for hen
EGG COLOUR: Marans eggs need to be an even colour by the 20th egg and it will determine the future colour scale rating of their eggs

Marans eggs can be classified as
- uniform
- stippled
- spotted
