This is the simple chicken waterer I made yesterday from a two litre soft drink bottle and an old plastic food container, both dragged from the recycle bin. The design is pretty well known to most people, but for those like me who have just discovered it, here it is. It cost nothing. (I already had the Araldite for another job.) The money saved on a shop bought waterer ($25) bought me an extra bag of layer's pellets and shellgrit.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/86068744@N05/7942444012/
I cut down an old round plastic container with a hacksaw (very hard plastic), and marked the five spots on the base where the 2 litre bottle would sit. This is where the Araldite glue will go.

With the bottle sitting on the base, put a mark on the bottle which is about 2cm lower down than the top lip of the base container. You can see a blue mark lower down on the bottle in the picture. Drill or burn a hole in the bottle about 8-10mm wide.

Araldite the plastic bottle to the base. When the glue has hardened, fill the bottle with water while holding a finger over the hole and put the cap on the bottle. Fill the bottom container with water and release your finger. This creates an airlock that won't release more water till the chooks drink it down to the hole. Attach string for hanging.

Put the new waterer in with the chooks for approval.

NOTE: I had only one problem with making this, and that was when the water kept gushing out of the bottom hole repeatedly each time I filled it.
Solution: Remember to put the cap on before taking your finger off the hole.

than657 My homemade pellet feeder is being redesigned as the chooks had trouble and didn't approve it. I'll post pictures when I change the design a bit.

A homemade chicken feeder for $5. It wasn't made from recycled things, but uses cheap items.
The feeder needed to have a narrow enough opening to feed from and be deep enough so the chooks couldn't flick out and waste the pellets.

Materials: Large plastic dog bowl - 3" deep ($2.50), plastic container with lid ($2.50), piece of camp twine, small bolt/nut & washer.

I cut the stand off the dog bowl using a box cutter knife and scissors.

3 holes were cut out of the plastic container from the bottom to about 3cm up. The container was difficult to cut with the box cutter without cracking the plastic, so I ended up using a metal Stanley knife and heating it over the gas cooktop to melt the plastic as I cut. Much better.

I drilled a hole in the centres of the dog bowl and container, and also drilled four holes around the rim of the dog bowl to thread the twine through for hanging. The screw went through the centre to hold the plastic bits together.

The underside looks like this -

Will the chooks like it this time? Will they forgive me for giving them one they couldn't fit their head into to eat from the other day? Let's try hanging it from under the tractor nesting/roosting box out of the weather. Off to the girls for approval -
