HELP!!! I have only raised budgies and cockatiels before!!!

Here is a photo of my "Boss Chookie" sitting on a combo of her eggs, the other hen's and the plastic ones. There are six of her and the other hen's eggs under her. The other hen is not too happy. I removed the plastic one's tonight and they were really hot. Does that mean the sitting hen is serious about sitting on the clutch?

Sounds like she's serious, six eggs would be what, 3,4,5 days worth for the 2 of them? Did the one hen try and peck you when you went to check? Did she steadfastly refuse to move? Sounds broody to me. Don't panic, let her go and you might be surprised what instincts Mother Nature has imbued in her. The only thing you might consider is whether you need to separate her from the others.

She has been sitting on the eggs since yesterday, she is making funny noises, is really warm to touch, the eggs even hotter and won't budge.

I don't have another abode to put her in

Will she and the unborn babies be safe if I left her in with the others???

Safetywise I don't know but I found it a nuisance leaving mine in the same pen because the other girls continue to try and lay on top of her and then your eggs keep accumulating, and then you don't know which have been there the longest and should be there, and will some eggs that are alreasy developing get abandoned etc... The new accomodation doesn't need to be very large initially; rabbit hutch, old dog kennel..., beer carton in the laundry....

yes its best to separate her from her co mpanions, or at best, assemble a little fence around her so the others can't get in. dog crates work well as broody nests.

We had been looking for another coop to separate the girls, but its too late [smilie=a_damnit.gif]

Don't count your chickens before they hatch - it is all so very heartbreaking to come home and find the nest abandoned, broken eggs and the non sitting hen's bottom covered in egg yolk

Poor hen that had gone broody is looking very desolate in a corner of the coop.

I have a post in Chickens in need of advice.

I have read your post, and replied, my chookies haven't had much luck of late, with the coop invasion and coup de nest by the other hen.

At least Mr. Fox hasn't got them like the poor girls next door
