I will be showing purchased roosters at the Sydney royal and I think it should be encouraged for people new to showing

I think it also depends why you're showing.

If you're showing for the experience or to showcase a rare breed, and you have up and coming birds of your own you want to show one day then it's great.

If you're showing someone else's bird because your own aren't good enough, or its just to win a prize, I don't think thats so cool. I also think if you're giving the impression you bred the bird that isn't cool either - the person who put the hard work in should be the one given the credit.

Showing a bird that came about because of your breeding decisions and your hard work and perseverance would surely be worth the wait? :-D

Winning with fowl you have bred is very rewarding . I always tell people who ask about showing fowl they have bought from us to go for it . It encourages them to get into showing . I have been lucky enough to attend shows where our fowl are being exhibited by there new owners and I get a real buzz out of it . If it is encouraging the fancy then it has to be good .
There are plenty of 'stories' out there about 'Major Prizes' being won by people who have 'Bought' a bird as it's a Small world and the poultry world is even smaller .
But .. Breeding and Preparing one yourself is far more satisfying , and if you want to get a really good name for yourself as a 'Showbreeder' this is the best way to do it .
In saying all that it's a great way to start thinkerg.gif

I started out with showing others breeders birds then progressed to showing birds I bred and the feeling of winning with my birds was wonderful and much better then the purchased birds. I would say to anyone starting out to start with purchased birds for the first year or even two then try your bred birds.

No I have never heard of owner bred shows and think that would be very hard to enforce unless the club uses closed rings and a ring registration and that won't happen

It certainly encourages the juniors to get into showing which in my opinion is the future of showing, my daughter hasn't yet got any of her own birds (ones that she has bred) to show so she shows birds she has bought. She does all the hard work, the cleaning of the pens, washing feathers and feet and last minute wiping, she puts them in their travel cages and she also approaches the steward and introduces herself, gets her numbers and pens her birds. The only help she gets from me is driving the car and sometimes pen numbers if she's a bit flustered.

Next year she will have birds of her own to show. As I said before everyone needs to start somewhere but there also needs to be a bit of ettiquite too.

READ THE SCHEDULE = if it says you can only show birds you bred yourself OR says you can not show birds you purhcased you need to only show birds you DID breed yrself to do otherwise is foolish because if someone turns up that knows you bought the birds/s they can lodge a complaint and you will be disqualified

SO READ THE SCHEDULE CAREFULLY before entering any birds

doesnt matter if the exhibitor is new to the show ring - READ the schedule to save potential heart ache later

It is virtually impossible for anyone to be disqualified under those condition sorry, this would mean the person complaining would have to prove 100% they bred that bird and how do they do that without an identifying leg ring or micro chip so it comes down to one word against another. I can tell you that there ARE so called experienced showers that DO show stock they did NOT breed, especially when they buy in fertile eggs or chicks but then claim to have bred them. I for one think it does not matter if you buy a bird you own that bird then you can show that bird. Jim

It depends what you do with the results I guess. If you pass the birds off as your own because you want to look better than you are - its a bit deceptive to the general public (and yourself).

Some other breeder has put in the hard yards and it doesn't seem particularly fair for some other person to take credit for it (if they are). Hatching an egg or buying chicks and getting the bird to look good as an adult is one thing, but if it won because of how close to the standard it was, the person who hatched the egg can hardly take credit for that.

If you're doing it for the fun and the results aren't passed off as your own than that can't be a bad thing though!
