Hi
How do I tell if a chick has Cocci?
Thanks

C.K. wrote:
If you ever get Cocci you will know they get lethargic and fluffed up and quite often have blood in their poop.

due to the Cocci being totally different subject = I have copied these parts into a new post here

C.K. well answered [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]
but let me add re Cocci = not all have blood in their poop although this is the most common diagnosis factor
also
the birds lose weight fast towards the terminal stages of the infestation - many refer to this as 'keel boning' as the breast bone sticks out due to the flesh being reduced to almost nothing = my personal opinion at this stage = do the bird a favour and put it down as it is rare that they recover from such a bad infestation even with treatment - some DO recover but they are never the same as previous to infestation

however if caught early enough and treated they recover well

the damage of Cocci is to the intestine - similar to humans who suffer from Coeliac Disease = the microfilia of the intestine are damaged and the human has great difficulty absorbing all the nutrients in the food they eat (or in the case of Cocci) the bird starves to death if not detected and treated early enough

note that in humans Gluten is the cause of Coeliac Disease - basically an intolerance to gluten found in wheat, barley, oats and rye – the gluten causing the intestinal damage and other associated medical problems – easily fixed by a change in diet

however Coccidiosis in chooks is caused by an infestation of the Coccidiosis Oocysts = a parasite which needs early detection and treatment

mummaroo did an article here =

It can be devastating to a young flock .I've had it once I had to go away for 3 days and had my Father look after my chooks we had a bad storm after I had left
when I got home the chickens had just started to die and I lost half . I have since got better meds to keep on hand just in case it happens again .
the pen was still wet when I got home I had to clean the pen right out and put in fresh dry material.
I think I read somewhere that there are about 7 different strains too but am willing to be corrected on that.

Wanna see what Cocci looks like?, go to my post:

viewtopic.php?f=32&t=19866

I was so freaked out when I saw this when I went out and saw one of my chickens had done this

Everyone was so helpful with guiding me what to get to help get them better again.

My babies recovered quickly and went on to live after being afflicted with this nasty parasite. Phew

Cheers

hide: Sounds horrible. Never had a disease wipe through my flock. Worst nightmare though

OK - if we are going to do this post right - lets get as much info in here as possible =

viewtopic.php?f=60&t=11437&hilit=+treating+for+cocci+using+baycox

the manufacturers of Baycox don’t tell you the WHOLE picture when you choose to use this medication they just tell you HOW MUCH to use, with no mention of other treatment necessary = if you dont treat the environment of the birds pens it will recurr within days
so I outlined a proven method of pen management that should go along with the treatment

note that Baycox is a Knock It Down treatment NOT a preventative

Amprolium is another treatment but it is given over a period of weeks = suitable if the birds are only showing the very first signs and helps to promote an amount of resistance ot Cocci
in my opinion Amprolium is not so good if the Cocci is not detected until nearing the terminal end of it all in which case you can try Baycox and hope it works (remembering that by the time they are nearing the 'end stage' not much will help them)

Yes it is and offers some protection .
But I have heard of cases happening if the conditions are ideal for the
Cocci .
