Japans bantams

Hi all,
I`m gowing on the weekend to pick up 3 japans bantam hens. Just for safty is their
some think I should look out for like a sickness or a decease. Can`t what to see them.

Hi wizz, thats sounds great! Its so exciting picking up new birds..I hope you're able to show us some photos

A couple of things to keep in mind and I"m sure others will add things I forget:

Make sure you have somewhere at home to keep them separate from the rest of your birds for a couple of weeks. This is to make sure the birds don't come down with a sickness after you bring them home and then pass this on to your current birds. A bird is put under stress when it's moved around and it can make them more susceptible to becoming sick. Often things at your home that your birds have become resistant to, can make new birds sick. Keep a careful eye on them when you get them home, and tell us if they start to look a little unwell.

In regards to their health you could start by looking at what other birds look like at the place you are buying them from. Do they all look in good condition and healthy? If you see sickness, dirty water and dirty pens this might be a sign your birds aren't in good health already.

When you look at the birds, do they have shiny eyes, clear/clean nostrils, clean bums, clean legs, neat and tidy feathers (except if they are moulting). If you can feel them and make sure you can't feel their breastbone at the front, their chest should feel plump.

You don't want any sleepy birds sitting huddled or fluffed up with closed eyes. If you can see their droppings make sure you can't see any blood although you may see some pink which is normal. Some birds under stress can get bubbles in the corner of their eye but you will need to make sure the bird is in good health in other ways to think this was ok.

Thats all I can think of for the moment, hopefully its a good start for you

I should have also said don't be afraid to walk away without buying them if they look sick. If you have a lot of experience nursing sick chooks and you REALLY want them, it might be worth it. Otherwise it will probably end in sadness and you with less money. Just make sure you talk about it with your Mum before you leave, because sometimes you want them badly and you might feel like its a wasted drive if you don't come home with something.

Have you asked for photos from the breeder before driving out there? I really strongly recommend this because often someone 'thinks' they have a breed but when you actually see it, they either aren't, or they are not a good example. I feel you should be well within your rights to ask for a photo of what is for sale before driving somewhere to buy it but just make sure you give plenty of notice. I have learnt my lesson the hard way!

I would only add to worm them as soon as you can pref the next day you get them home don't reply on the seller to do it. I have picked up fowl that the seller has told me they wormed only to find out they did not as worms were found in their poo.

they have setled in well and ouredy lade one egg. and gust this thursday my mum bort two boy japans bantams ones old and the other one is realy young but older nafe to be shown the two boys are white whith a little bit of black flickers. they girls colours are one fully black one white cremy whith a darcky crema on each wing and the onther one is coulerfull [smilie=new_smilie_colors1.gif]
