These are some old photos of the upcoming pullet. She is older and already laying. We also have six Gold Pencilled hamburgs & two Lemon Pencilled to try with the uncle, the 4yo gold La Fleche rooster that creates the buttercup fowl. He is in my avatar, the combination of genetics in the horn comb & rose of hamburg creates buttercup.

This union has produced progeny. I will try to get a photo on the weekend. It will probably be Sunday. The interest will in due coarse be colour of legs, uniformity of buttercup comb and colour of plumage between gold male (used gold pencilled hamburg one parent) & pullet (used one gold spangled parent). This already proved to produce excellent combs, now whether this translates to gold wheat pattern on females, and golden buff males , we'll see.

But I have a few questions . Please keep in mind you are dealing with a Novice who knows very little about genetics . I just thought after my failure with the eggs Tiger gave me (Thanks anyway Tiger) I might give it another shot . But this time I might have a 'wildcard'

Do you know if their are any other combinations that will create a buttercup other than horn and rose - ie single comb combinations- ?

Are their any other breeds other than Buttercups that have the Buttercup comb - ?

Is the Buttercup comb recessive ...meaning can it stay hidden for a few generations then jump back out - ?

Any duplex type, ie leaf or "butterfly", buttercup or horn can give rise to buttercp comb. Some of those can be done cross to single but clearly heavy culling of bad combs will be required and the duplex for buttercup may not be strong even in individuals that express a good example. It is like from a family of five footers to get a six foot sibling. Heavy culling may mean cutting out over 90% of progeny by comb alone, let any other desired feature like leg colour of feather colour.

Are their any other breeds other than Buttercups that have the Buttercup comb - ? Caumont, Ausburger (black german breed) ---- funny the Germans bred this fowl whilst the French went for the La Fleche and both could be derived from the same parent stock.

Is the Buttercup comb recessive ...meaning can it stay hidden for a few generations then jump back out - ? This is more complex to answer, for instance in fowl where the genetics for dupex is strong....homozygous for duplex , buttercup is clearly dominant. Hetrozygous still dominant but in my view incompletely dominant. Once there is no gene for duplex, I can't see how you would get it back. It would be more to do with unexpressed duplex from a hetrezygous specimen which itself would present some issues to producing stock with good expression for duplex down the line.

Previously I made another point in that there are a lot of faulty comb types that the inexperienced would mistake for buttercup. All manner of wild type expressions give rise to the term but only "buttercup" is the real buttercup.

THis Cockeral is mated to six gold pencilled pullets and one gold buttercup pullet (above) all laying and eggs in the bator. He also has a white and a black hamburg pullet. [smilie=a_withstupid.gif]

I won't give up on the Buttercups , I might even try to get some more eggs out of tiger
