I have not posted here for quite a long time, life happens and you just don't get time. Anyway. Even though I live in a semi rural area with lots of like minded people who keep poultry which includes roosters. We have now had a new neighbour move in who apparently does not like roosters. SO far he has made several complaints to council about crowing roosters and a few neighbours have given up their boys rather than pay heavy fines. Recently I had the ranger approach me about my immediate neighbour, looking for their rooster. However my neighbour does not live on their property and I strongly suspect the complainer was after my boy but had the wrong address. My other side neighbour has also had a visit from the ranger and was spoken to about their rooster. Anyway long story short, before rangers come back here I have been looking at options to minimize my boys middle of the night crowing. I am looking for advice and anecdotal information on any tried and true or tried and failed methods of stopping or at least minimizing roosters night crowing....here are three things I have done some research on and had both yes it works and no its a dud comments.

1. Rooster collar - some people say they work, others not
2. Lowering the roof on the hen house or alternatively raising the roosting shelf so rooster cannot stretch his neck and crow. (I actually tried this, I raised the shelf and still he crowed but he seems to have started later than usual.
3. Keeping a light on and making rooster believe it is still daylight to reset his crowing clock.
4. Blackout box to keep him in separate from the hens.

Anyone got any advice on any of these methods and what is the most effective?

What time do you take them out in the morning?
Can I use my famous Astroturf on the floor on the box?

I have only 1 rooster. He does not crow as much as some. We are in rural residential area. There are a number of people with poultry around us and some with roosters.
The black out box would be best.

In saying all that, dogs barking all night is evidently okay, wild birds and caged large cockatoos carrying on is okay too. Wild parties going on till early hours is a must I suppose.

What is wrong with people. Maybe they should have a look at their perfect lives and see just how much noise they make day and night. I would not get rid of my boy just because of a new neighbor. They should be the ones to adjust not the long term resident.

Yeh its funny how a dog can bark and bark for hours and people say nothing but if a rooster crows and its the end of the world

Never have seen a rooster collar. Not that I need one.
