My aviary/loft

It's a 6 section cage build entirely by my partner as I am useless with construction jobs but help when needed. The finch/quail/rosella section is almost complete 100% natural planted aviary, with seedy grasses and native shrubs, only doors to go. Next section with be for doves, and the rest, pigeons and chooks :-D

at the very end there will be a loft for the pigeon flyers. No accurate measurements were made as the design changed to suit the needs of the birds we'll be housing.

Each section has access from the front and doors between the sections. 100% neighbour approved because they all want free fresh eggs :lol:

This is 2 1/2 months of work.
Total cost approx $200 for the wire and $50 for poultry perches and acessories.
The timber was donated by a pallet maker friend. The roof is second hand from an old zincolume shed, some branches were found in local bushland after a recent storm.

I got quoted $2000 for a small loft from a professional :shock:

. As much as I loved it I couldn't afford it

. It's no good for housing large numbers of parrots Even though it's really solid they'll chew the timber, jut as well poultry doesn't.

When it's finished I'm going to try and make room for a pair of pheasants, I will consult the forum closer to purchase time as to the best one

what type of quail and finch are you looking at getting?

I already have them in a smaller aviaries. Zebras, society and red brows.
I have a trio of bobwhite quails that lay like crazy but the pigeons keep disturbing them and they won't sit.

Yes, pics like that inspire the rest of us to build more and bigger pens, too.

The final touches were added just the other day.
They don't look like much on the outside but it's the function that counts.
It has 6 sections all up, I didn't get the duck pen in the photo

There is an entry from the front of each pen and another between each of the pens. This prevents escapes (paticularly for the finch section) and also maked it easire to move from one pen to another without comming out of the enclosure.

The cost altogeter was about $200-$300 for aviary mesh, nails, hinges, screws, and bandaids for every time my partner hurt himself building it!!! - the rest is recyled timber and corrugated iron.

There will still be modifications to come as we're adding water dishes on the outside for easy clean and access without going into the pen. You can see one just below the fantail pigeon.
