New pekin pen nearly finished

Well I have nearly finished my pekin pen for Meggsie and his 2 girls. And take note of Kylie's lovely chain wire I have used which made my life a lot easier.

I am going to put a hinged door on the kennel with a smaller opening for the chooks to get in and out which will keep it nice and cosy but can be opened up for easy cleaning for me. I have faced the opening to the north so weather should not be a prblem. I have made the ramp I just have to paint it and put in up so that I can remove it and put it back with ease (cleaning again.)

I raised the kennel so it gives them an area under and there is no wasted ground space. I am also going to put a solid tin roof on the outdoor area or at least 2/3 of it for protection from the sun and rain. They will still get to free range as well but will have to be on a rooster basis with the silkies and the lavenders. So half a day each in the vegie garden which is all protected with chain wire fencing.

The door to the main pen is now on (after I took the photo). I used an old security screen door I had. Timber was from the fence we replaced recently. In fact everything has been recycled. :-D

Fantastic recycling.

I figured that when I noticed it wasn't quite square.

My belief is that if anyone builds a chook pen with perfectly square corners and stuff, they've spent too much money...and probably far too much time...on the project. :-D

how did you cut the fencing?

I don't know about Rosemarie, but the way I "cut" mine was to choose the length I wanted and at that point cut the top and bottom loop off of one "link" (one 6ft length of zig-zig wire). With the help of my daughter, I basically rotated/twirled/spun it round and round to remove that "link".

Similar to what greenaus said only I made a few cuts along the one strand with a pair of fencing pliers (only ting I could cut it with) then twirled out the pieces and cut the shade cloth with scissors.

I think by not being quite square gives it character. :shock:

Gee, fencing pliers. They would have been a little easier for me to squeeze than the wire cutters I used. (They cost me about $3 at IGA).

Kylie's chain mesh is brilliant stuff. I'm sure you and many others would agree that it wouldn't be hard to find uses around the place for dozens of rolls.

I'm thinking of enclosing under the house at the front with a roll of it.

If I had 100s of metres, I'd enclose the whole property and let the kids out to free-range, too. ;-)
