Coop heating

Is there a form of heating that can be used for coops on very cold mornings and I don't mean electric I am thinking more of solar heating or solar powered heating that is safe for the hens. We have had 4 days in a row of minus 1 and the girls seem to suffer

I cover the coop with a tarp over night, perhaps cover the side where it is more exposed to the elements?

That's OK, you can get them cheaply at your local bargin shop and attach it with giant pegs for under $10.

Hi

I don't want to rain on your parade but I feel you are wasting your money.

All you need to supply to your chooks to stay warm is a dry, wind proof house and they have their own feather doona.

We live in Tasmania at 350 metres above sealevel with our lowest temp this winter being -6c and our chooks have layed all winter without any heating, just a dry windproof chook pen and their own Feather Doona.

In many countries breeders have heated coops such as the UK and parts of the USA its to help with circulation in the legs and feet so its not a bad idea if you live in snow country. You can use just a simple light globe in the roost that will give off heat or one of those red heat lamps if you want to.
