Both my roosters sleep in night boxes and as the neighbors work they rarely hear them so they don't mind me having them

Do they still crow in the box? never tried this idea but have heard mixed results

Yes they do but the purpose of the box is to make the crowing sound proof(i think)

Well it takes about 70% of the noise factor away but not 100% still thats enough for even the fussiest neighbor

What do you make the box out of is it wood or metal?

either is fine but metal gets very cold in winter - the roosters combs would suffer as a result and even more so if they lean against the metal
what ever is used just make sure it has adequate ventalation and bedding material and is kept clean and treated for mites and lice regularly = you dont want a build of of 'bugs' in the night boxes

we made a box out of plywood, lined the sides roof and door with carpet. just have shavings onthe floor. this is where our malay roo
sleeps. he can stand up in the box but when he crows in the morning he sounds like he's 10 km away.
i have smaller boxes for the silkie boys, they are lined with carpet as well. we have used flexible tubing(lawn mower air intake tubing)
so they get air in and out easily. because the pipe bends down it doesnt let light in. they only know to crow when they hear the neighbours roo(about 4k away) start up. they dont carry on for long as its still dark in thier box.

I like the metal boxes for hygiene and easy to clean I found the wood boxes a pain in the bum to clean and then dry
