Modified rollaway nest

Do you want to stop this? its egg eating BTW

If you answered yes then you need to build this:

Its a simple rollaway nest*
here is a cross section picture (kinda)

How to build it:
1measure the dimensions of your box (L*W*B)
2Then cut out a peice of rubber mating it should be as long as your box plus the height of it
3Tac the mating down and the extra length is to be tacked up on end of the box so when the egg rolls down it will hit the wall and not break.
4Next find a thin peice of timber (i have used an old sheet of that wall board stuff) and cut it to width of the box and you can have it as long as you like, (mine is just long enough to completly cover the egg and then some)
5Finally tac it into place, then place a brick under the opposite end, the bricks thickness can vary pending how steeper incline you want.

Great idea Peter. Do you find the straw stops the egg rolling into the protected area?

I will find out tomorrow,
the golf ball rolled fine but thats a sphere, the straw is only there so the hen can lay more "naturally" but if it compromises the "rollling abilities" i will remove it

very innovative, we use wire to achieve the same thing 4 or 5 years ago because of 2 laying hens eating eggs, worked a treat.

A success and a failure :!:

Millie used the nest, so she wasn't intimidated by its new features, but she moved all the straw down the covered end of it so the egg didn't roll away to safety, so i have removed all straw and we will try again tomorrow :roll:

You know Peter you could try some artificial grass or rubber matting as the lining. Either of those might also work and the egg should roll into the covered area.

in future I will invest in some of the synthetic grass
BUT
this afternoon when i was removing the straw from the box, I found an egg in the "safe" area!!! which was a pleasant surprise, so i can safely say that the box works!!!
