night crowing boxes

Question regarding night crowing boxes.

What size night box would I need for an australorp rooster?
I need the size in cm please for my other half to make it please.
Do I need to line the bottom of the box?
Do I have air vents at the bottom of the box so the sound does not get out?
Do I put him in the box at dusk and out 1 hour after sun up?

You might find this amusing but possibly worth a try. Have you heard of a tool called a crow bar? Do you know where the name came from?A long time ago in a far distant galaxy chook farmers strung a bar above the perches just above back height of the perching birds, now as you would no doubt know when a rooster prepares himself for a right royal crow he'll stand up straight flap his wings and let rip, but not if he cracks his back or head on a steel bar positioned just above him. The noise emitted is more like a chooky ouch**%#!.

I would'nt call it a night crowing box, because the pupose of the box/cage is to stop the bird from crowing.
If the box /cage is made correctly the bird will be unable to crow. Like purefethers says to crow the rooster will stand up tall and flap his wings. So all you have to do is make the box/cage of a height where the bird cannot stand up tall and flap his wings. Make the top of the box/cage at the same height or a couple of centimetres shorter than the rooster when standing in a normal stance and he will be unable to crow because of the height restictions.

Sorry all, hate to say the "night box" does not really work as the rooster will still crow. As for the bird needing the stand and flap his wings to crow, not true. As anyone who has taken birds to a show and travelled early in the morning or over night. As soon as the males see light they will crow in their carry boxes.

The best option to reduce the noise is build a sound reduced pen (note not sound proof), put them in a good sized box in the garage. The neighbours or your family will be happy with the reduced noise. Let the rooster out about an hour after sunrise, or once there is plenty of background noise (birds, cars etc.), he will be very happy to get out and see his girls and let everyone know he is on duty.

Did you know that a rooster's comb is a light sensor , they don't need to see light ( they won't at 3 am in the morning). But their light sensor (comb) will notice a subtle difference in dark to light contrast. Hence you will hear the rooster before you hear the Kookaburra in the old gum tree.

How do you know its his comb and not his eyes sensing the change in light? :-?

Probably because he is asleep and you may find this difficult to digest but he may also have his eyes shut as a result of being asleep.

Im interested to know what you base your statement on? Are there scientific articles which show a rooster comb (or hens comb for that matter) isn't just flesh but can in fact sense light?

How does anyone know they haven't sensed light through their closed eye lids? Most eye lids are not that thick that they totally block all light. When you close you own eyes in a lit room and wave your hand in front of your eyes you can see a change in light occurs.

What about dubbed roosters?

As a learning process I would be interested in reading more about this.
