new chicken coop

Hello my husband and I want to build a chicken coop but we are not sure if we should build the coop out of metal or wood? I mean the frame and the night area as well. Are there pros and cons for using either? Thanks for helping

hi , if its any help ive built 5 laying pens 5x5x2.5 mts 7 rooster pens 4x3x2 mts 4breeding pens 4x4x2 an 3 sick / isolation pens 2.5 x 3 x 2 mts all out of recyicled roofing iron an treated pine from local tip and alll my roaming yards made of second hand chain mesh

yep from tip for a total cost including feeders water containers n nest boxes a mere 475 dollars to house close to 900 plus dollars of poultry

so it can be done

Thanks for all the detail, we were thnking around 7-800 dollars so timber sounds like the answer. Did you cement the posts in the ground?

no there just rammed in the soil mixed with a few hand fulls crushed rock , we do get quite a few high winds thru here an nothings mover :mrgreen:

yet , must admit all corner post are a meter in the ground , guessing that helps , cheers n beers gary

Thanks we can get hold of a hole digger so 1 metre in the ground is ok and we have a heaps of old bricks to put in the hole. Did you wait a couple of days to let the pole settle before hammering on the wire?

on some i sorter did and sorta didnt

to explain the pens were all planed out , so all post , roof n side rails were nailed on as i went :mrgreen:

that way at the end of the day i could see how much i had done for the day and where i was up to for the next , hoping this of some help cheers n beers gary

It’s a great help, building is not me forte, well far from it actually so advice is all important. I was thinking of using an air compressed staple gun to fasten the chook wire but not too sure if they will be strong enough???
