Sorting Pekin Ducks from Drakes

Hi,

I have just aquired 5 Pekins - supposedly 1 duck and 5 drakes. I want to get rid of 4 of the drakes and get another couple of ducks, but having never had ducks before am unsure how to tell them apart.

I had been told the drakes will have a curled tail feather. Is this and size the only difference?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi chickontherun, WELCOME TO THE FORUM, Hope you find the Forum Informative, Helpful & Fun. With Adults, as you wrote & Happyhenz wrote Tail & Size. Ducklings can be sexed by pressing the region of the crop inward, and with two fingers, press the vent slightly outward. By this process, the male organ protrudes and is exposed to view, while in the female, this remains flat.

Dependant on age the tail is one way, the quack is the ohter dead give away.

a drake makes a warp warp noise relatively quietly. where as the ducks make a QUARRRRCK QUARRRRCH noise, like a fog horn (especially pekins).

The girls will be quacking away by 8 weeks, and drakes will be relatively silent.

This allows you to sex them earlier and prevents vent damage which can be tricky if you have not done it before.

Hello, Pick up the one you think is the duck and then pick up a drake..The duck should make a quack QUACK sound very loud..and the drakes sound will be alot more hores sorta like he has been smoking and he has one of those holes in his throat :lol:
