what type of waterfowl do you keep?

Hi everyone, :D :D
Having just recently gone into waterfowl I am madly reading and studying whatever I can lay my hands on re ducks, and last week obtained from our local libary a book that I think is great for a beginner like me as it covers everything, a lot of you may already know this book but here are the details. It's worth reading.

Have you ever had your mandarins in the same pens with Peacocks :?:

. Do you pinion your ducks :?:

. Are your duck pens heav'lly planted :?:

. I visited a mandarin breeder the other day and his pen or should I say aviary was like a botanical garden ---- it was great but a bit hard to see the ducks ---- he had other birds in there as well --- small parrots,finches,doves etc which could be viewed easier as they were higher up in the canopy, the ducks stuck to the pond which in certain area's was covered by overhanging plants etc,

Hi Snowball, We have our mandarins in Moderate to Heavily planted aviaries and pens, we use Palms, Banana trees, Tall Grass, & Creepers they are mixed with a variety of birds including Finches, Parrots, Doves, Fuit pigeons, Pheasants. We haven't mixed them with Peacocks and Probably wouldn't due to Peacocks & Peafowl being a little stropy at times. We have had great success mixing them with Pheasants with just the occasional aggressive gesture from the Mandarins. In one Aviary we had the Mandarins & Golden Pheasants lay eggs approx 3 feet apart, which was very suprising! Mandarins are like most waterfowl and spend the most part of the day "On the pond" but this is a problem as they don't like to share!!! we have water dishes off the ground so everyone can have a drink.

P.s We don't pinion.

Hi Snowball,

Did you manage to find plastic 'dummy' eggs. Nearly all of the stock food stores down here on the Gold Coast have them.

If you haven't managed to find any let me know and I will see what I can organise.

No not yet. In your stores do they have the small plastic eggs -- Mandarin size :?:

. My girl has gone to nest now and is sitting on 7 eggs in what can only be described as a really cosy nest. She has lined it with down, and when she leaves the nest she covers the eggs with the down--clever girl.

Anyhow back to the eggs--- yes if they have the Mandarin size I would love to get a dozen or so then I'm ready for next year. Please let me know --- I can transfer funds or send cash whatever suits you.

No worries Snowbald,

Just one question - what size are mandarin eggs - similar in size to duck eggs or closer to chicken eggs in size???
I wouldn't want to send you emu sized plastic eggs by mistake :lol:

Hi,
Mandarin eggs are about the size of bantam chook eggs -- or approx half a normal chook egg. I sure don't need the emu size ones :!:

pinion,this disables there flight right? and if not is there any way to stop them from flying as i would love to get some but most my runs are out side :cry:

P.S for the original question "what breeds of water fowl do you keep"

I keep,

Mallard ducks (i clip thier wings)
and Sebastopol geese (which i love to death,thier the best breed of geese you could ever get :-D
