Rouen Clairs

Hi Guys,
am looking at getting a Waterfowl breed to go on with and have been looking at Rouen Clairs. Has anyone got any pics of them other then the very few Ive seen and does anyone know where there are some in OZ?

hmmm

grasshopper are you sure you have the room for this particular variety?
Have seen some in mexican country .... if that helps LOL

rouen clair is a rare colour form in Aust, being light phase mallard..there is some speculation that the true bird was never imported and the colour form has been "unlocked" by several cross to elminate the dominate dark phase genes.
there are a couple of was to go about it if you understand colour genetics.

we have a rouen clair drake that this year is mated to a saxony duck, thier progeny(F1) will all be hetrozygous for blue dilution ( carrying 1 blue gene and one NOT blue gene) the rouen clair has no blue genes (carrying 2 x NOT blue genes)and the saxony is homozygous for blue dilution (carrying 2 x blue genes).

mate the progeny (F1) and you get 25% in the rouen clair colour form, 50% looking like the parents and carrying 1 blue gene and the other 25% will be in the saxony colours.

if you didnt want any more sax's you could mate one of the F1 ducks back to the RC drake and you get 50% rouen clair and 50% carrying 1 blue gene and looking the same as (F1)

you could use a good appleyard crossed to a saxony aswell to get things going, but you'd also be introducing the restricted gene which would lower the percentage of birds in the colour form you are chasing.
