candle eggs

How many times do I need to candle the eggs? I have read to candle them at 7 days then at 14 days but should I do it again at 21 days? Just to make sure all is going well. I have never candled the eggs before so have been reading some web sites to how to do it. Can I confirm I candle the eggs on the larger rounded end were the air sack is?

Only candle them once at 7 days you don’t need to do it again after that. If you keep opening in incubator the eggs won’t develop

the eggs will develop if you open the incubator to candle the eggs. day 7 and day 14 is good practice, and you don't necessarily need to candle the eggs at day 21 though. sometimes people will candle at this time when most of teh eggs have hatched, and they are trying to decide whether its worth waiting for the last of the eggs to hatch, that is looking to see whether they are alive or not.

Depending on the colour of the egg shells, white eggs candle at 7 days, brown eggs 10 days. I find 10 days the development is that litle bit more and the air sac (show in fertile eggs) is very obvious. I then candle when I put the eggs in the hatching tray day 18. This allows you to pick up any chicks that may have died in second half of incubation period. I find I get less eggs left in the hatching tray that you have to guess if they will hatch or not.

Another method to try on day 18 that will confirm if the chicks are still alive. Part fill a 2 lt icecream container or alike wit warm water, needs to be enough for the eggs to be covered. If you place an egg in the water filled container a fertile egg will float big (air sac) end up, within a few seconds you will see the egg moving around. With a empty or non fertile egg or ded chick the egg will sink to the bottom. This is a good thing to show the kids.
