Lonesome late hacthing chicks- What to do

Hi Deb,
I thought I would comment on you little pekin chick that gets attacked by the others when you try to put Lil Chip in with them. I would take the other little black chick in the other photo and put with Lil Chip for a day or two so they bond together. Then put the two of them back with the group. This way Lil Chip has a friend and a lot more confidence. After a couple of days they will all get along well together. I only suggest the little black chick as I find chicks mate up quicker with their own colour not necessarily their own breed.

Hi CL, Sorry for the late reply, just got home from my third ship this week phew!!!

I just put lil chip in to see if they had gotten over it, and no such luck, but I did notice chip was getting in first as if to say leave me alone :roll:

I will try what you suggested, maybe a little mate will help as he/she cuddled up to the chipmunk. When I am watching TV I put lil chip down my top so she/he isn't alone so much, and chip climb all the way up to my sholder then rolls down and lays on her/his back with a big yellow belly for all the world to see. Lil Chip seems to have a love of life which I find very endearing.
I will go put the little black unnamed OEG in whe Chip and see what happens. Thank you for the advice, I will let you know how they go.

We had the same problem with Pip. By the time she hatched, Mum and the other kids were totally hostile and she nearly lost an eye before we rescued her. She spent her first night with just a lamp for warmth, then we bought a day-old meat chook for 85c, introduced them and they fell in love.
Now, 8 weeks later, they live with the Big Chooks. I put them in a small pen inside the chook run during the day once they'd feathered up a bit, then started letting them out for brief supervised visits. Mum and the mean aunties were not nice for the first couple of weeks, then I was able to leave them all together during the day and bring the bubs in at night. One night I went out to get them, and they had already put themselves to bed in the shed with the others! So now they are fine. Nugget the meatie is bigger than mum and the aunties already, which helps! Pip is tiny and still runs over and jumps up on my shoulder if I crouch down.They are the original odd couple - I'll post new photos soon.

When it comes to mixing them, you just need to be patient and be ready to intervene in squabbles until they all settle down. Oh, and not mind when baby chooks jump out of their box and go walkabout in the laundry..... :roll:

After a full day of Lil Chip and Lil Dale together, they had their initial shape up to each other, then calmed down. I found them snuggled up together and the chicpmunk.
This morning I woke and my OH said a chick was dead, he only knew it was a black chick but didn't know which one. It was my sweet Lil Chip who had died :cry:

I have no idea what happened, I checked them before I went to bed and they seemed fine.
Out of about 10 eggs she has laid that I have found Lil Chips was the only fertile one, so I guess now I will have to hope she lays some more so I may get another lil Pekin Chick.

At least Lil Chip wasn't alone in her/his final hours.

Oh, that is sad, he sounded like a real little character. Sometimes there is just nothing you could have done.
