Candling @ 1 week

Hi I have candled the 13 eggs under my hen at 7 days and I can only see 3 clearly have embryos in but others have dark shadow in them. At what point should I consider those eggs as not developing and discard them as they were layed at different times/days before she started sitting. I have written the dates on the eggs so I know when they were layed too. Cheers for any help in advance!

Well I watched some info posted on this site and some other sites info and re-candled the eggs and removed 5 definites that I thought were infertile. To test my theory I cracked them and yep, all 5 infertile. Scrambled eggs for breakky!! Lets see how the other 6 go but there are 3 definites and I could see veins and the chicks moving so happy about that.

Nolliavac,
With a good candler at day 7, you should get a good view. The fertile eggs will have a pinkish hue, blod vessels will be seen, possibly the embryo bouncing around and the air sac will also be well defined. The infertile eggs will be have a yellowish mass down low in the egg and you can hardly make-out the air sac.
At 10 days it is very obvious between fertile and not.

Yes I look for the blood vestals thats a 100% sure sign of fertility

So can you see the blood veins only at or after 7 days is that right?

7 days = to the naked eye the forming embryo can be seen
mainly as a dark spot surrounded by blood vessels

Well its day 19 (approx from dates on eggs) and only 2 eggs made it thus far. I cracked open 11 eggs through the 21 days that I thought were infertile to find my observations to be correct - they were infertile with one that died in early stages of development. Two have made it to 19 days and just candled tonight and can see one with beak, moving and all, the other is a couple of days behind in date but is wel developed so hopefully by the end of the week I should have two new beautiful baby fluffybums! Mother hen is clucky as so she will be a good mummy. Very excited!

I struggle with the candle thing too I think I get it right but the egg never hatches and some I thought were not fertile do!

candle in pitch darkness and if possible use a candling torch - always on the blunt end = get yrself some magnifying glasses to help see the veins in the early stages of development = this might help
and = it takes time to read the signs - be patient you will get much better at it [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]
