Brooder heat options

I already know most of the answers to this, but figured I'd open it up to discussion for others that follow us to learn from.

I've just replaced the second light bulb in my brooder in a fortnight.

Other than switching to another heat source, are there any options to stop bulbs blowing so regularly? eg. If it's due to chick fluff and stuff, will some kind of moisture-proof enclosure help?

And, the main point of discussion...
What kinds of heat sources are there for small home brooders?

I've considered heat cords, they're available on eBay.

Each of those would also be suitable for incubators and despite having bulb holders (old lamps) available, I'm considering either cords, cables or mats.

But, let's not discuss incubators, as that would be off-topic in this thread about brooders.

Heat rocks for reptiles,
i dont think they would work very well, but its just an idea ??

Buy a terracotta pot (fairly cheap) enlarge the hole in the base and install a lamp socket through the body of the pot. Also drill a couple of smaller holes through the base of the pot. Put in a light bulb and turn it on. Mount the pot upside down (looks like a bell) in the brooder maybe on a couple of bricks.

The lamp will heat the pot, which in turn becomes a heat source. The bulb is protected, the chicks arent in bright light 24 hours a day and its is easy to make.

OR

Buy a ceramic brooder lamp with a reflector, they last for ages

Thanks Peter. I did see the rocks you're talking about. If I remember correctly, they were a little expensive and/or high wattage.

Jocler, I really appreciate the reminder.

I read about that and saw photos of one in action. I had planned to do that and forgot. All I need is a good size terracotta pot and saucer and I'll see how I go.

I've also considered the Cold Brooder option.

I have a freind who has a freind (freind of a freind) - he made his incubator out of an old electric blanket he removed the heat chord, and wound it around the inside of the box , I think the same could be done for a "Brooder" the beauty would be it already has a thermostat and powerlead , he just kept it on a lower setting and hey presto. Definately food for thought :idea:

That is simply genius. I saw an electric blanket at The Warehouse, The Warehouse, Where Everyone Gets a Bargain the other day for just $24.95. I think it was QS.

Though, including postage, I've seen some heat cords similarly priced on eBay.

Definitely worth trying. If not, me, than someone else.

I thought so , My freind of a freinds name is "Roo Ried" and he has been succesfully hatching chicks with his "electric blanket box" for years he is an old timbercutter ,from the days when if you couldn't buy it you made it , I was going to make one myself but I like my bellsouths , I hope it proves as effective in a brooder situation , I am sure after seeing your incubator pics , youll make something genius.
