Success rate on posted eggs

Hello everyone,

Im thinking of having a go at hatching some Faverolles as pullets are pretty hard to find for sale.

I have never hatched any eggs before and i have heard the even the experts have pretty low success with posted eggs.

So was wondering, what kind of success rates do you have with posted eggs? I mean how many chicks would you get from a dozen eggs?

Im actually waiting on 2x dozen of blue australorp eggs from WA. The breeder says that she was contacted by the people who ordered the eggs from her and got 11/24 in QLD and 18/48 in TAS. They both were using different incubators.

Low hatching rates are caused by non pressurised cargo holds of the plans apparently, also they may be sitting at some post officer for a few days depending on timing.

It may also depend on what time of year it is in correlation to the breeding season and fertility rates, the temperature and environment the fertile eggs were stored in, if they were regularly turned daily, the packaging and transport conditions and if they were rested for a few days also before they were incubated either under a broody or in an incubator.

Lots of factors involved, it's the risk you take, breeders do not give guarantees.

So what percentage do you work on hatching is 50% wishful thinking?

2 from 12 is realistic = 6 from 12 is great any more from 12 is excellent
I always recommend getting 24 if you can = BUT only if there are enough hens for the breeder to get that many in no more than 5 days so the eggs are still fresh when you get them = always have them Express Posted
