i have taken out the chick, and put in the sponge

here is a pic of egg one.
you can see the bare membrane, its in a triangular shape.
it has been like this for almost 2 days. should i still just leave it ?
when is it time to interfere ?

Before now for me.

I don't now if it's made a difference, but what I do is use a pointy piece of egg shell to pierce the membrane to allow the chick some fresh air. (well fresher). If it had stayed like this for over a day I'd have considered dripping just a drip or two of water onto the hole now and then.

It sounds logical to me, but may sound silly to others.

I'm not talking about huge holes and I'm not talking about drowning chicks. I've never lost one of these yet.

it doesn't look good, I made a tiny hole, and i could see its beak, and it wasn't moving or making a sound. very moist in there. :-?

That's because there's a chicken in there.

As you learned in Science each bit of matter or energy has to continue. So, all that moisture in the egg before you set it (the yolk and white) is within the chicken's meat, bones, digestive system, etc.

i chipped more shell away, no response, i will give it till morning, then i will open it up.

I dont undertsand how it can attempt to pip then die so suddenly ???

I hope the other will hatch, or else jedda will be all alone :-?

Jedda is so cute Peter. I wish you lived closer and I could give Jedda a little friend as I have had a couple of pekins hatch today.

Hi Peter - I'm glad you got at least one little one. Is it really a blue colour or is that just the light in the photo?

How is humidity controlled in the incubator - can you read the level?

I know that the chick I helped hatch the other day would have died after pipping if I hadn't helped it out. The humidity was too low and the membrane was just stuck all over it like dried glue - it's little head was stuck to one of its wings and one of its eyes was glued shut until I moistened the stuff and peeled it off. So far it is going well, and I've now put it out with its brothers & sisters. It just doesn't look nice & fluffy as its still got membrane on some of its feathers - looks like it's wearing hair gel!

Maybe the difference with mine is that I could tell it was really strong and trying to get out. It was heaving around inside and cheeping loudly. That's why I couldn't leave it in there as it was my fault it was stuck (and I'm not saying that yours is your fault

).

I guess some chicks just don't make it for other reasons. I have older brothers & sisters to yours here but I know all the eggs didn't hatch, and at the hatchery if they are a day late hatching I think they get thrown out (I didn't ask

)

It will be interesting to see what people with more experience have to say here. I know many just accept that there will be failures, but it's a bit harder when there are only 3 eggs you are waiting so patiently for.

Let us know what happens this morning. If you still only have one I'll see if I can find a buddy for it. See PM.
