And another one. Not sure how to put more than one piccy on the same post.

We'll be doing the shelves either tomorrow or Thursday. Already cut out and just need to have the legs welded on. Our semi-auto turner is taking shape too. Will keep you all posted. This is getting exciting now. By the time we're finished should have 2 doz eggs to "sacrifice". Ha. I've heard of religious zealots sacrificing chickens, but never eggs.

Attachment:
File comment: A= Full glass front - it's all about seeing what's going on - reduces need to "peek". Glass is 5mm thick, hopefully it'll be thick enough. Just get it double glazed if it turns out it loses too much heat - hubby works at a window manufacturing place - all offcuts.
B= Our really pretty looking polystyrene insulation. Any suggestion re: filling in all those excess holes? The bottom layer is "free to move" so it's easier to clean, sides and roof all stuck on. Not sure about how we're going to clean it yet. Might try and glue some thin lino if it becomes a problem.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and will be taken on board. As long as we don't have to change things TOO much.

Go with the lino. Easy to clean.

Where does the thermostat probe enter the incubator? Can you point it out/take some more photos?

[My original question before I edited was whether the probe was measuring the temp of the compartment or the wall (due to how it looks to me in the photos).]

Hi Charles.

Thanks for replying. I've attached a piccy of the thermometer sensor and thermostat sensor's locations.

The green "spray spots" are where the air flow holes are.

I neglected to add this piccy originally because of the dirty looking polystyrene. Cleaning is not a priority at the moment. We took sensors out to fit the shelves.

File comment: A= Thermostat sensor location (can be moved though)
B= Inside/Outside thermometer sensor
C= Gaps between polystyrene? OK? ?
Green spray spots - air flow holes.

While plugging those gaps may improve temperature stability, it would be more for aesthetic reasons. It's optional. Consider plugging the gaps with strips of foam or polystyrene.

Air-flow, air-smo. ;)
In an incubator that big with semi-auto turn, you'll get plenty of air exchange when opening to turn the eggs....in my opinion. Four air holes is fine.

I am unfamiliar with how those long metal thermostat probes work. Does it read the temperature at the tip or of the whole shaft?

Either way, regardless of where you put it, the proof of whether the temp is right will be in the hatching. The indoor/outdoor thermometer is a very good idea and if accurate will help a lot.

Good luck with the completion and testing. Keep the photos coming.

Hi Charles

I think (by what I've read) this type of thermostat has liquid in it and when it expands that's what sets it to activate.

Hubby is still out there finishing off the semi-auto turner (which won't require us to open the door) - you'll see piccy's soon. ;)

I'm actually thinking about racking my brain (eeek scarey I know). I want to get the maximum and minimum according to the thermometer, find the mean and hopefully that'll be the temp the eggs will stay at. Am I making sense, I've got it all worked out in my head, just having a blonde moment.

See ya, gotta go make dinner.

Cheers for now.

Ann

Hi all.

Well I wasn't too happy with the thermostat and called the ebay seller I bought it off. He said the one he sent me was designed for reptile incubators not chicken incubators. :x So he's going to send me a "more sensitive" one. The temperature variation was 5 degrees which I think was just too much - although it wasn't there for long. We turned it on Monday or Tuesday night and it was a bit chilly, and didn't go up much past 33 degrees, so we taped some polystyrene on the glass front and it started going up. Hubby's looking out for another scrap of 5mm glass so we will put a double layer of glass to see if we can combat that problem. I have taken piccys of the "semi-auto" turner, however with Tank hurting his beak yesterday and numerous other "interruptions" I haven't had a chance to upload (and label) the piccys.

We have people coming over for wine and nibblies this arvo and as usual our bomb looks like a house has hit it! ! ! ! So I'm off to do "domestic" stuff.

Will post piccy's sometime during the weekend.

Bye for now.

Ann

That's an interesting variation. So after the wine and nibblies, did you have too much blood in your alcohol supply? [smilie=a_rolling.gif]

No Charles not too much blood in the alcohol :-D - just the right amount, I hate hangovers with a passion, plus we had to get up at 5am to go to the local markets. You know, I bred Light Sussex chooks to eat and what happens, I have 6 hatch and 4 are pullets, so I sold them at the markets and one was an incubator mishap (border hopper), so wasn't a sussex.

Well here's piccys of our "semi-auto turner" as promised.

Cheers for now.

Ann

Here's a piccy on the other side of the incubator wall.

File comment: A+B= The two handles used to turn the eggs.
C= Our double sided tape to alter air flow. Notice the pretty cut edges. Hubby could only find my daughters craft scissors. If nothing else, these fancy cut pieces of tape will make this thing work.

Oh BTW I have 4 dozen eggs to put in there now. I got one dozen fertile Campine/Minorca eggs from the markets for $10.00. The lady I get them off has big beautiful Minorcas and Campines, but for a general purpose breed I love the cross (sorry all your purists out there). She always has some for sale if anybody is interested.

They are a week old, but I'm really hoping to get them in soon. I'll call the guy about the thermostat today and see if he's sent it yet.

Bye for now.

Ann
