Incandescent Light Bulb Shortage

HI Ian

I went to Mitre 10 at K'roy last week and they only have what's on the shelves left. Which is pretty well none. They have the halogen globes, but they're about $3 a pop. Which unfortunately is what my old lamp did - after it had been through 2 x $7.00 halogen globes on Friday morning. So a mercy dash to K'roy and all is warm again. The lady at Mitre 10 said they would still be making the halogen globes, but only the screw in ones I believe.

I'm with you Ian, I'm going to figure out a better "non globe" method. Hubby has a home brew warmer, but I don't think it'll get warm enough.

Most [not all but most] poultry supply stores would have them - I got mine from Bellsouth 03 97967044 - they are a mail order company - try their website for all the stuff they stock - http://www.bellsouth.com.au [or it may just be .com = I ring and have a chat so I dont know]

The smaller incandescent globes are still available.

25w and 40w -- Round or candle shaped -- Usually in packs of 2 -- $2.49 at Woolies until tomorrow (maybe longer).

Yesterday I discovered I had a pack of 4 x 100w globes sitting here. Just what I needed for the big brooder. It has three bulbs, two of which are on a dimmer switch...the ones which are now 100w.

I made an intresting discovery the other day when both the stove and the fridge light blew out at once. While you cant get the good old household light bulb anymore, you can still buy ones for the fridge and stove. :-?

Apparently there is no alternative, especially for the stove, for them as yet, and they are still making them. They are both the screw in type, but the fridge one was pretty big and 40 watts. They cost a little under $7 for the two of them. Unsure if they come in larger watts, didnt think to ask till I got home.

I reckon we succeeded with our suggestions about the smaller round 25w & 40w bulbs and the fridge/oven bulbs.

All are still available, but not as low cost as the full size bulbs used to be.

I also found two unopened downlights today with bayonet fittings. They go into a regular bayonet socket. The packaging says they're supposed to be located (pointed) no closer than 50cm from a wall. I figure they must put out some heat.

They're made by Philips, 240w, 50w, and dimmable. I don't remember how much they cost and don't know if they're still being sold.

Backyardbarny also suggested using the smaller bulbs that also fit the bayonet fittings , Unfortunately I've found they blow, Very Quickly , within a few days I had Cold chickens huddled undern Blown Bulbs :-?

I think the Dimmer might be the way to go . Funny that I was doing it that way 8 years ago , I've done a big loop and landed right back to where I started

Oh well at least I know what doesn't work :-?

Oooh...that's not what I wanted to hear either. I bought six twin-packs of 40w candle shaped bulbs from Coles last week for $1 per pack ($6 for 12 bulbs). They were a clearance line.

you may as well try them , Mine werent the candle shape just the small Rounder ones .Let us know , I am leaning towards the dimmer Idea though .

The dimmer idea is great and really aids in adjusting the temperature. As for my new bulbs, I'm adding another light or two to the brooder some time to encourage the chicks to spread out more. I'll use the bulbs then.

was watching the news late last night and people all over the world are stocking up, some have rooms full of them because they dont like the colour of florescent globes.

The ban starts in november.
