New to Incubating

I am very excited for the fact that I found one of my Lav Pekins sitting on eggs!
She was sitting on 6, I put two extra ones that were laid a day or two later under her, so out of 8 eggs,4 are definitely fertile , 3 infertile, 1 unsure. If you see a vein, but no baby,would a baby be there?
The babies are either pure Lavender Pekin, or half Lavender Pekin and half Silkie

Thanks Chookie. This has not been a good week. What with the incubator & then the death of one of my babies it has been a sad state of affairs recently. :cry:

But that exciting about your girl that's sitting :-D

If you see a vein but no baby then maybe just leave it a couple more days and candle it again as a vein has got to be a good sign. Put an asterix on it or something so you can quickly identify it again. Also, it could be that it started to fertilise but didn't make it any further so that could be a possibility.

Can you get free fertile eggs from anywhere else? Maybe you could do this to rule out any fertility issues..

I've saved up the last two days egg from the girls so I have six to incubate so far, so I am hoping to have at least 12 by the end of the week to incubate.

Will give "Take 2" a go next weekend.

I candled again yesterday( I candle every day) there is still just a vein. conf665

Two of the eggs I reckon are going to hatch in a day or two woohoo4

I would say if the eggs are two days away from hatching then you shouldn't be able to see very much at all.

I'm assuming the 2 you are hoping to hatch are candling almost black? When I candled the eggs under Clara at day 19 they were Black and I couldn't see anything at all. So I was praying that there were chicks inside and not off like the ones in my incubator.

If the one your looking at is just a vein then it sounds like the embryo didn't mature. That's okay though, nature knows what it's doing. Have faith and know things happen for a reason. That's how I keep going when I have losses and failures.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you :-D

Yes they are very black, especially one of them. I can't see anything but black. The others are slightly black, I can sometimes see a foot.

Well still, 4 out of 8 eggs for all first timers is pretty good! :-D

Very true. I'd be super happy with a 50% hatch rate :-D

On another note: I put 12 eggs in the incubator today :-D

I didn't want to wait any longer. I was going to wait until Saturday but I have to go away next Saturday & I wanted to candle at day 10 to cull if I need to before going way for the weekend.

Got a quick question for everyone..........When would be the earliest that I should see veins, when candling the eggs?

I've normally candled at day 10, and see veins then, but I'm going away Saturday and was wondering if I candled earlier would I see the veins?

I'm at day 4 soon to be day 5.

Well I'm at day 19 now and down to 3 eggs out of 12.

The 3 I have left are totally black & I'm pretty sure they're not off as they don't stink, like the last ones that went black.

I've stopped the egg turner and taken that out and laid the eggs on the tray so they are ready for the chicks to come out. :-D

(fingers crossed)!

I just don't think Clyde is hitting the spot as none of the eggs I disposed of had any signs of life in them, which I believe should mean they weren't fertile.

Do breeders trim feathers around a roosters butt or just the girls? conf665

Apart from Clara, the girls I have don't have really fluffy butts.

The eggs that have fertilised have been from Becky, Ginger & Carmel my 3 Isa Browns :-D

Will let you all know soon how many hatch [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

7 days are the first signs some say at 5 days but I find that to early.
