It is really sad, as Mr. Rooster and his 6 sons, first wife and daughter have all left  I mean we live in a country town in the middle nowhere and can't keep a rooster :( , I wouldn't have kept Mr. Rooster and all his boys, councils and neighbours make life difficult

It's all about making money now. You need a permit now to keep a rooster and more than 4 hens, we used to be allowed to keep 20 chooks and 1 rooster. Lots of people can't afford to apply for a permit, (or the ranger's fine), and if the permit is not approved you like lose $160 as it is not refundable. The neighbours are all new too after the fires, they don't understand the country way of life, roosters crowing to greet the day, cows mooing...

To all those who live in the Shire of The Yarra Ranges please write to your local council to change these unfair "Farm Animal" local laws, especially those who were rezoned as Urban from Semi Rural, we were in the bushfires and our chooks have help us heal. Please understand.

Thank you, kindly 52.gif

Good luck with your hatch, I hope that they are all pullets!

Hello again :)

Miss Vanessa was off the nest this morning, not sure for how long, but I took the opportunity to give her some protein and check the eggs.

I opened the run gate and all the other girls went out, so it was a nice intimate breaky, just the two of us. She didn't eat too much ham and certainly didn't scoff it as she normally would, seemed very picky and just taking a while to swollow. I think this is only her second time off the nest since Friday - does that sound normal?

I felt the eggs while she was distracted with the ham and they weren't particurly warm, in fact I could only just detect a slight warmth with the back of my hand. However then she noticed that I was near the nest, she had another little peck of grain, a breif wander and back on the nest. Soooo, I guess she's doing ok??

Is there anything else I should be doing for her, the eggs at this stage? Eggs went under her Friday evening so this is day 5 of incubation I guess?!

So thankful for a post by Wyandotte Champ.... (sorry, don't know how to quote "Stages in chick embryo developement")it's like my little daily check of what MAY be happening in there  Don't count your chickens and all that ;)

Thanks

[smilie=a_rolling.gif] Same! Everyday I was reading out to Hubby "today claws and bek forming" or whatever was going on for that particular day! sidesplit.gif Good to know someone else is as eager as me.

To make sure Clara kept up a good food intake I would feed her while she was on the nest. She accepted the diced veggies & mashed up boiled egg (for extra protein) with a fair bit of excitement. She wouldnt eat heaps at a time, so i divided the egg into three prtions with the finely chopped veggies every morning & night/late arvo. She only got off about every 4 days so twice since Friday seems very normal.

Try & keep Vanessa's condition up while she is on the nest because when she gets off she will hardly eat anything as all the food will go to the little ones. In fact, I found Clara lost more weight after the chicks hatched then she did while sitting on the nest. Very scary, but she is starting to put more weight on now.

My chicks are 6 weeks old tomorrow. [smilie=a_cookiemonster.gif]

You're doing well Cass! [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

Love to hear about your ongoing success Thanks Chicka-Dee. BTW how DID the beans go with your girls??

OMG. This broody Mumma and chick hatching thing is very emotive!!

About 9-10 days to GO! (not counting chickens....only expected days!)

Vanessa has moved nests, is now sitting on 9 (4 unfertile) as opposed to 5 fertile eggs and when she does hop off, her behaviour is totally bizarre!! (wonder if I was like that when expecting? Fully expecting a WW reply to that statement :-D )

Everything crossed!! Thanks all

Thanks all

How long can a broody be off the eggs without doing damage? We are about day 14 (I think) and yesterday I had a chance to feel the eggs and they really were quite cool.

Any info would be much appreciated!

ps I'm entertaining the idea of candling....good idea? bad idea??

Thanks

Hi Cass

I did the same, even when they were directly under Clara, they never felt very warm at all. I know....you can't help yourself right! sidesplit.gif. Broodys can be off for about half an hour before the egg drops a degree in temp. Stop panicking!

The only advice I can give you about candling is...Don't do what I did. Lol.

I never told anyone this before because I was so embarrassed with what I did, I honestly thought the egg I tried to candle was not going to hatch because of what I did! Hubby still doesnt know. hide:

Anyway, so I googled how to candle eggs right, and I found a picture with an egg sitting on top of a empty toilet roll which was placed on top of a torch that was turned on. So...I think that looks pretty easy, so I goes and gets me a toilet roll, a torch and an egg from the fridge, toddle off to the laundry where it's pitch black and turn the torch on (light shining up to the ceiling), place the egg from the fridge on top of the toilet roll and put them both onto the plastic screen of the tourch AND hey presto the egg was like a pretty little candle showing me what a non-fertilized egg looks like.

So I think..that was easy, so I ask hubby if he wants to come with to candle the eggs , he's like " yeah right, the football's on", so off I go into the darkness with my torch and toilet roll in hand ready to harass Clara in the middle of the night, so I can steal her eggs to see these veins Ive been told about on a fertile egg.

So Clara lovingly let's me steal one of her eggs from underneath her, I place the toilet roll on the torch (light on), grab the egg, put it at the top of the toilet roll and let it go to sit there to see the magic unfold before my eyes of the veins I have been so wanting to see...only to hear....pffft thunk! The egg slid straight down inside the toilet roll and hit the bottom of plastic of the torch. sidesplit.gif the egg was smaller in diameter than the toilet roll! So when I let it go, it just dropped straight through to the bottom.

What's worse, is I tried squeezing the toilet roll so it was smaller in diameter...and did it again! Pffft thunk! [smilie=a_doh.gif]

So I gave up with a large dose of the guilts that my poor chook was most likely going to lose one of her babies that she had been sitting & incubating for the last 14 days, all because I couldn't help my curiosity and wait for mother nature to take its course!

So...whatever you do, don't do what I did, because the guilt nearly killed me. The embarresment, I can live down (I hope).

Cheers
Chica-Dee

Oh Chicka-Dee. Firstly, let me thank you for your on going support. Secondly, congratulate you on your selfless openness and honesty (even if you do feel a bit sheeepish) Sharing the ups and the downs can only benefit for the greater good hey?!
Thank you for sharing than657

Ok. STAY CALM.....DON'T PANIC [smilie=a_disconcerted.gif] OMG, I'm sooooo nervous!!

So its quite possible everything is going along fine? Just getting soooo close and I want to know NOW!!!! Point taken tho, guess I can hold out a few more days......

One more thing (for the moment), how will I know if the chicks are coming out ok? eg how long should it take to completely hatch, or after what length of time will I know that a chick is not viable?
