Brooder heat options

I am sure this is something I put on another forum of which you are a mod J.

Will post pics in my album...they'll be up soon as they are approved. Can make these guys for under $15. I make mine for about $8 using cords from broken lamps. I only use 25w bulbs as well.

Yes B&P you did. But then if you remember correctly, I raised your first chicks using this method way before you posted it.

This terracotta pot method was actually published in a book by Rick Kemp, at least 10 years ago, along with the similar use of a metal garbage lid on legs, I use the ceramic reptile bulb quite effectively with an old metal lampshade i picked up at the tip.

IMO

Sorry APF but if these people are so heartfelt on poultry than why are they coming here to stir a pot that can't be bothered??? Must be a bit boring in they're home port is all I can think.

at the moment i use the combination of the ceramic lamp and terracotta pot.

the pot just sits on its side in the box while the ceramic lamp is suspended over the box.

the pot absorbs the heat acting as a heat sink and with temps -3 etc
at night this really helps the little ones keep warm as you cannot put the ceramic lamp too close to the chickies for fear of overheating them

system is working surprisingly well at the moment, the ordinary incandescant globe just could not make enough heat in this weather.

a lot of members are members of both forums, actually multiple forums,no one is starting a slinging match seb, or stirring, except u------ someone posted a reply to the question, you commented, which was unneccesary, just my opinion, cheers pam

This thread had quite obviously been taken off topic due to my original post and those seeking substance from something off another forum.

I posted in my true form of offering a source that both works and is cheap to make. I read few technical books as they bore me and find learning and creating my own way gives me the best creations of all.....life from an egg.

I use a plastic crazy clark type box as my newly hatched brooder. I have fitted two globes in it and I use two 40 watt globes if it is in the laundry. If it's in the shed I put bigger globes in it. I judge their heat requirement by the sound they make. If they cheep loudly, then I pull the lid a bit further closed.

I know this was about alternatives to globes, but I find that having two on at the same time is a good backup plan. If one blows, then the other keeps the chicks alive until I notice. Also, I used to have a thermostat on it and the globes would click on and off a bit like in an incubator. That blew the globes much more often. If I just leave them on without the thermostat they rarely blow. Feather dust doesn't seem to worry them, probably because the chicks I keep in this one are two weeks old or younger.

When my chicks get older I transfer them to a commercial brooder that has a heating element in it. The good thing about that is that it is light in the day and dark at night - more natural sleeping pattern. The bad thing about it is the cost of running it. It puts the power bill up.

In summer I think the cold brooder is a great idea. I have a cardboard box with strips of towel hanging in it which the chicks huddle underneath. It works really well, but I think it's a bit too cold for it at the moment.
