All this worry about the size of air sacs !!
Conditions must have been near perfect to get an early start and high percentage of hatch, doesn't happen unless conditions are ideal.
Next time do as you have this time and let mother nature take control.
Good result.

Hi Oaklands,
I was worried because my last hatch with pretty much the same conditions resulted in a lot of dead in shell and pipped chicks that didn't make it out of the egg. Watching the size of the air sec gave a better indication of the humidity than the dodgy gauge.

Very pleased with my final result of 31 out of 36 eggs. [smilie=a_cookiemonster.gif]

Only one pipped and didn't get out. I will definitely do the same next time, with a little less heat.

Wickedwings - Yes I just candle to see the size of the air sac. :-D

Jo

I have dropped the temperature .2 deg, I'll probably go another .3 for the next lot. (so would be 37.4 on the gauge. Not that that helps because they calibrate them for each unit) I wouldn't like to say for humidity because I had to drop it really low for a few days. For hatch the gauge was jumping from 45-50 RH, constantly, I'm sure that wasn't right. As the chicks started hatching it got a lot higher.

I was watching the air sac because I had had your problem too. Temperature caused the early hatch but the humidity is what got 'em. Either too big to get out of the shell or not moist enough and the shell got to hard.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I had one early chick 18 days that still is a bit puzzling but I think now I may have drowned them. the incubator never got above 60% humidity so I tried filling more trays to lift humidity for hatching. So I think I had a problem with the humidity reading on the incubator the chicks were very wet and a lot of liquid in the eggs. I purchased a hygrometer from dick smiths this morning. Temperature on incubator is right but the humidity when I filled the trays is very different to what the incubator is saying. I'm still in the testing faze I will know tomorrow.

Congratulations! They are ever so cute and fluffy!

Am I allowed to ask this question? What breeds are they?

Hi johs I think I have worked out this incubator now .I have the Temp on the incubator down to 37.4 now and a Dick Smith Hygrometer inside that is telling me 38.3 . I have had eggs back in for 4 days now so can not turn the incubator back up to the recommended 38.2 that the manufacturer specified which was what I had my first batch at Temp must have been way high . Fingers crossed this time .
