These two roosters were hatched from Isa Brown eggs and I was wondering if they're sterile?

Yes they can crow at 20 weeks. Pullets lay at 22 weeks. Why would you think they’d be sterile?

Well I don't know if they are or not, why I asked is bc I read that Isa Brown hatchlings aren't Isa Brown, they revert to their original stock, like a RIR whatever as these have.

I thought maybe they're sterile as well bc they're not crowing or mounting yet

Cheers

That’s right, Isa Browns are a hybrid the result of crossing Rhode Island Reds and Rhode Island Whites. You also right they do not breed true but that won't affect the fertility of any cockerels hatched. You can breed an Isa rooster but it won't breed true either.

Is there an older rooster already crowing?

If there is they may not crow when there is already a rooster who is top of the pecking order. Generally you will find roosters lower in the pecking order keep a very low profile for fear of altercations with the top rooster. Depending on the nature of your roosters they may not mount any hens or crow when there is another top rooster around, or they may just mount hens but when he's not close.

Yes Gun, one is a large fine looking RIR, the other is smaller but is similar to an Isa Brown.

Thanks for your input, Cheers :-D

No Roova, There's nary a squeak heard to 'Herald the dawn' a_partyguy.gif
there're the only roosters in the neighbourhood. I've seen them confront each other though, I'll have to allow nature take its course I 'spose, [smilie=a_chuckle.gif]

Cheers.

that is NOT true ISA's are not just RIR's X RIW where did you get that from? no one really nos what they are tho these two breeds where used but many other breeds where added and even if you knew that breeds where in them you would not be able to make them as the lines used are not the same as the ones available.

regards
youri.

Isa Browns (and a bunch of similar lines) are the hybrid of two utility strains of chicken. The red line used as a male parent is indeed based somewhat on the Rhode Island red and the white (or more properly silver) line used as the female parent is based somewhat on the Rhode Island white. Now neither of those utility strains match the standard of excellence for the breeds, they are very highly selected for egg production & efficiency. So you can't make an Isa Brown from a cross of those parent breeds, you have to have the specially selected utility strains of those parents.

I'm always amused when breeders of pure chickens poo poo these commercial lines as not pure. There is an absolutely massive amount of effort gone into breeding the utility strains used as parents, far more than any backyard breeder of pure breeds could possibly put in. The Isas and their breeders should be treated with respect for the remarkable job they do in commercial settings.

youri I got that from the fact book as it’s the origans of Isa browns. All you need to do is Google it. Know doubt in 2010 there’s all sorts in them just like so many other breeds now days
