Phoenix Eggs

I have tried to hatch Phoenix eggs in a Bator with no success is there a trick to it. I have the temp right and humidity seems ok and the eggs are fertile as they semi develop but they never hatch, any ideas please

best if mum can do it herself where possible - the chicks tend to be stronger

question = where are the lines from???

I recently brought them from a person that I believe got them from a Tasmanian Poultry Auction so I don't know the breeder that actually bred them but they are only pet quality but better than nothing I guess.

'pet' std can make nice pets

The boys make good pets once trained to 'perch' so they dont damage their tails - I currently have one in training - and you have to be careful you DONT tread on them :roll:

Hi there.
Good luck with the eggs.
I am hatching for a friend, tried my incubator which hatches other breeds excellently, but not pheonix.
We have both tried banties, same problem, hardly any hatch.
The only luck my friend had was in her hova bator. She got 6 out from 8, however this is all the hova has hatched.
The worst part is they develop, get half way thru & die...... Or die in the first week.
Out of say 45 eggs, we have 6 pheonix chicks.
I would not recommend buying eggs at all.
Or then again thats why the little suckers are so expensive.

Thanks Danny that is what is happens to mine they seem to start to develop then die in the egg? I think both of you are right I will use broody hens from here on. Thank you both for your comments they are much appreciated

We are starting to think the pheonix may need a higher temp than normal.
I have used one of best broodies I have & still only 2 hatched from 12.
So my next plan now is I have cleaned the incubator out, filled it up with eggs including a doz pheonix. My plan is not to open the bator once during the time, not even to candle.
Will keep you posted with this lot & see how I go.

I have abt an 85% hatch rate atm so we have a number of the little ones running around
if you DO incubate remember the eggs have to be turned SLOWLY = nothing fast or rough about it

I learnt over a period of time with PHX - but still learning of course - no one knows everything and every tip from everyone helps = the information pool needs to be added to constantly

It would probably be diet related, feed a breeder ration, if one breeder is getting 85% and another 12% then there are so many conflicting factors, i would always try diet and husbandry first, then also incubator temp and humidity. As phoeinix are rare it will be hard to get lots of info on what others do, good to see you are asking.

DIS can be caused by many factors some genetic and others nutritional, also fluctuating temps in incubators are not good. I am unaware of the genetics of Phoenix but are the short legged? That is, do they have Creeper gene? if so this gene has high mortality in shell when homozygous? Just another thought.

No they are not a short legged breed - they are supposed to have nice long slender clean legs - of course someone may have a line that has had Jap Bantam added [why I dont know] and that could cause all sorts of hatch problems - my birds definitely dont have the Creeper 'issue' of impurity

sadly there are many PHX out there that are - let us say = less than 7/8ths pure - the average from my investigations is a 50/50 mix of all sorts of breeds! making it hard for those with these lines to develop that famous long tail

but some are lucky enough to own birds that are at least 7/8th pure to absolutely pure :-D

feed is often a factor - mine eat a variety of green foods and pellets are grower and grains are medium crushed as they are smaller birds
