Hi, I have had a bit of experience with broody hens and have always been happy with separating them for a few days to de-cluck but one of my girls, Precious, a bantam partridge is broody a day or two after she snaps out of her clucky stage...I have another clucky bantam old english game hen joining her this time so they are in the cat carry cage very miserable indeed...

Precious does keep getting over her broodiness but first sign of an egg and she needs to sit. If i let her have a fertilised egg or day old chick, i would need to get a separate pen as my Isa Browns are very mean to newcomers. What are your thoughts, i am finding this stressful watching her so sad. Cheers xx :?:

wave.gif Doolan,

It seems Precious is serious about becoming a Mum. Get her some eggs to hatch. She well then be overwhelmed with mothering duties. This should do the trick to snap her out of her broodiness for a while.

Ok..i will....my husband has given in and finally let me buy a separate enclosure ...21 days will give me time to find one....

I have found a great man nearby that will take any roosters too.

Thanks Chickababe....i have done this before but only with all same breed, those Isa Browns can be vicious tho...no match for a new mum I expect

Doolan, how very exciting!!

If you've had some experience with broodies before, perhaps you can sit back and enjoy this time a bit more!! (Says me who has been down to Ness possibly 15 times today....just to see if she's still sitting

Last time with Ness, I waited until the chicks had hatched before moving them to separate lodgings, so if you do the same...21 days should be heaps of time to buy or knock up something for the new family! To be honest about last time, I saw Ness and her chicks had jumped/fallen out of the nesting box (which was one besser brick high) not realising they would be so mobile so early, and they had set up camp on the towel that I had spread out in front of the nesting box....which was essentially, being a first timer too, my lodgings during the hatching ;) I had always had the "chicken tractor", a wedding present from a dear friend. Little did they realise I couldn't have but 2 chooks

We too have a local breeder who will take any roosters and has done since we first began our chookie journey taking 12 day olds from the Kindy hatchings!!...most of which were Isa Browns, and they can be nasty, but since our Boss chookie Rosie (an Isa) left this world, I've not since heard the desperate cries from the 2 or 3 that she tormented constantly! Mind you, the two main ones were 1 x Leghorn and 1 x Australorp, bigger than Rosie but so much more pleasant in disposition!! I guess it takes all kinds.

woohoo4 We could be hatching around the same time :?: Be sure to let us know how you are getting on!!

PS [smilie=rlp_smilie_242.gif] Here's to wonderful Husbands

Oh no  Doolan.

What a bugger :?:

Perhaps now is not the time? Maybe you are getting a big loud Chookie "Next Time"?

Am wondering about your surrounds and your pen from your last post? I am by no means a poultry experts.....well anything, but was just thinking again today about our pen, and it is not totally enclosed from above.

Having lost only one in total to the infamous phagocyte (or at least I think it was this) as documented in various threads, I still think about our failing defence lines. "If you build it.....they will come" [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

Keep your Precious close and your goannas and maggies closer?!?

Yes, you are right, it is very secure but never secure enough, goannas are so strong..but my staffy will rip it apart if it comes into the yard..she loves her chickens and protected them ferociously from a red belly black but, who knows, i will do my best to keep the goanna away xxx
