Silkies, silkies, silkies everywhere

I purchased some silkie eggs off Tahir and Amir from APF. I am very happy with the success rate. 11 out of the dozen where fertile, one fully formed but died in the shell

. 4 beautiful black babies ( which I will keep any girls) 4 very nice little buffs, 1 partridge :shock:

and a lovely little white one which I will also keep.

Lucky you , I have seen photo's of Their silkies , and must say , I think they are very good

Lucky you, Rosemarie - such an abundance of silkies! And you have a great mix of colours.

My silkies also seem to be pretty fertile (despite the back-to-front mating technique employed by Mr Cluck!! :roll:

) but unfortunately mine all seem to be variations on the same sort of partridgey-buff shade. I'm hoping I get something a bit different in the next batch.

Here's wishing you a high percentage of girls out of these little cuties!

I was very lucky with my last hatch of silkies and ended up with more girls than boys all of which have now moved onto nice homes. My silkies are mostly white the occasional black and the occasion grey or chinchilla. All the pretty coloured ones came from the eggs I bought from Tahir and his brother. I am still after blues but they are like hens teeth.

some buff silkies are hatching right now. we're pretty happy with the offspring that one of our hens make. Even though she would do no good as a show quality bird she gives off some of the best silkies. Although some of the blacks she gives off have brown in some of the feathers.

Quite a few around the traps are doing well with silkies, 08 may be a good on for silkies.

I have a quick genetics question - it is related to silkie chicks so I hope I'm not thread-jacking! :oops:

And as you, CL, are really good on genetics - if I have eggs from a white silkie hen by my silvery-grey rooster with red bits in his wings am I likely to get any straight whites or are mine likely to all be this pretty-but-nothing-official type of colour?

With your white hen and your silvery grey you will most likely get more white than not and the occassion grey and possibly chinchilla as I think the white in silkies is dominant. When I had my chinchilla rooster and my white hens I had more whites with the occasional chinchilla. I had kept a cockerel from him (white) and put him back to the white hens and I get nearly all white but again I got a lovely little chinchilla recently.
