Can anyone tell me when I candle eggs, which way should the egg be up, rounded side or pointy side. Tomorrow is day 7 in the bator and I will candle them tomorrow night when I can get maximum darkness in the room.

Any other advice would be great appreciated. And thanks in advance.

Well after looking at numorous candling pictures online I couldn't resist to have a peek at 2 off the eggs. I will try my best to explain what I seen.

Both eggs I candled had lines like lightning, but a large portion of the eggs had a large dark shadow that seem to take up half of the eggs that was kinda like down the side length ways, but it was like a dark shadow, I didn't see a ring or anything like that just like squiggle lines and this dark shadow.

The humidity has been between 50-55% constant and the temp has been between 95-100F also fairly constant from day 2.
Oh and the 2 eggs I looked at 1 was a silky and one was a normal ginger gals egg. They both felt warm to the touch but not to hot.

Don't use a real candle.

Those lines are most likely spidery blood vessels and are an encouraging sign of likely success...so far.

I wasn't sure what you were seeing with that dark area, so best if I don't comment in case I think it is something (good or bad) that it isn't.

Keep turning the eggs regularly until day 18.

My first little batch of Australorp eggs are up to day three...I think. I really ought to write it down somewhere.

 Umm I figured if I used a candle I would end up with a fried egg, so I used my smallish size maglite that I got when I was in California, they are so cheap over there compared to australia.

That dark shadow almost looked like it was moving or throbbing, so hard to explain.

If I remember I will take my camera and see if I can get a photo, although it would help if I had an extra pair of hands and my other half is on nightshift tonight so unless I can teach Dixie the dachshund how to hold a torch umm. Will try anyway.

I use a Highpowered Maglight (small torch) I put the torch in the vice and look through a dunny roll , I'll only do it if I have the fire going in the shed or it's a warm night , Because it's a fairly time consuming process , I don't really get to hung up on candling , unless my bator is really crowded , . and I want to reduce numbers . to make it easier when I handturn , Works for me .

Hi,

Are all the eggs at the same developement? or had some of them been under a sitting hen before you put them in the incubator. I ask that as the spidery red lines and dot are veins and probably about 5 to 6 days into the incubation. The ones with a darker mass sound more like around 12 days incubation.

It is fine to candle them as it is the core temp of the egg that you need to worry about and the short time you have the eggs out of the iincubator to candle them should not affect the core temp at all. Afterall a hen gets off her eggs at least once a day for about 20 mins to half an hour.

Don't candle the eggs after you stop turning just leave them alone then and try not to open the incubator at that time.

Thanks Ian, I used a small maglite also and a dunny roll, I must be phsycic or haowever you spell that.

Hi CL, Most of the eggs I put in one the first day, then I added another 4 fresh out of chooks butt the next day. But none have been sat on at all.

Tonight is the 7th night so I am going to candle them properly and hopefully take pictres if I can, sure wish I had a vice :-?

Take Care you pair,
Deb :)

For candling I got a torch with the brightest globe in it that I could find. Then I took it to Bunnings and went and found a soft rubber plumbing fitting that fitted snugly over the light end of the torch, then had a small egg sized circular opening on the other end. I suppose it is probably for joining up plumbing pipes of different sizes - it's soft like that rubbery connection on your toilet. It's perfect for resting the egg over the small hole to candle.

I usually look at the fat end of the egg first because then I can see the air pocket, then I have a better look at the rest if it's still transparent enough.
