The APVMA removed the approval for Emtryl early in 2008 I believe. You can still get it via a veterinary prescription for non-table birds such as parrots or ornamental pigeons.

The only alternative control of blackhead is to maintain hygeine from chickens. The blackhead organism is carried by one of the worms of chickens. Turkeys can get it direct from chicken faeces or from worm eggs laying about the pen up to three years (or possibly longer) following chickens. They can also get it from other turkeys if infected.

So you need a clean brooder for turkey poults and keep them away from numbers of adult chickens. Once turkeys are adult, a free-range situation where density of chickens is low and where chickens are wormed regularly seems OK.

The reason Emtryl was removed appears due to technical reasons rather than any firm proof of toxicity. You see it was first released for use in the 1950s I think. The technical requirements for proof of safety in those days were quite simple. Now there are very detailed technical requirements prior to release of a medication. However, it is expensive to complete these requirements, Emtryl is well out of patent, and it appears that no one wants to pay the costs.

I can't find anywhere that someone has explictly stated what they think is wrong with Emtryl. Perhaps it is implicated in some sort of human disease process? But there does not appear to be a clear link as far as I can see.

There's no Emtryl [Dimetridazole] in turkey starter??? It has Lasalocid sodium for the prevention of coccidiosis not blackheads. Some light reading for everyone

TURKEY STARTER (Medicated)

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
RIVERINA TURKEY STARTER CRUMBLES are suitable
to be fed as a complete feed for growing turkeys from day
old through to approximately 7 weeks of age. Turkey poults
should have unlimited access (ad-lib) to RIVERINA TURKEY
STARTER CRUMBLES.
This feed is the first stage in a two stage feeding programme
for growing turkeys. It is produced in a fine crumble form so
that feed wastage is minimised, digestibility is improved and
so that a consistent intake of nutrients essential for growth is
achieved. This feed is formulated in accordance with current
research into turkey nutrition and is mixed using a variety of
quality raw materials.
COMPOSITION
• Base grain as depicted seasonally and therefore proportions
may vary.
• Wheat, maize, sorghum, bran and pollard, a
combination of protein meals (cottonseed meal, soybean
meal, sunflower meal, blood meal, meat meal), vegetable/
animal oil, limestone, sodium bicarbonate, salt, choline
chloride, amino acids, lasalocid sodium, Riverina vitamin &
mineral premix.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
• The first 3 to 5 weeks are of vital importance for rearing
turkey poults. Upon arrival of the new day old poults it may
be necessary to dip the beaks of some of them in feed and
water to encourage the consumption of both of these.
• This feed is a complete feed. No supplementary feeding is
necessary.
• During this period approximate feed intakes should be:-
Age of Birds
Approximate Feed Consumption
(per head per day)
Week One
10 - 20 grams
Week Two
25 - 35 grams (toms)
20 - 25 grams (hens)
Week Three
60 - 65 grams (toms)
55 - 60 grams (hens)
Week Four
85 - 90 grams (toms)
65 - 70 grams (hens)
Week Five
100 - 105 grams (toms)
85 - 90 grams (hens)
Week Six
120 - 130 grams (toms)
105 - 115 grams (hens)
Week Seven
155 - 165 grams (toms)
125 - 135 grams (hens)
• NOTE: The above feed intakes are only indicative. Feed
intakes will vary with the season, variety of bird, lighting,
shed conditions, disease status and other environmental
conditions.
• For the first 2 days of feeding it is best to spread some feed
on trays or newspaper to enable access for all birds.
• It is important to change the feed regularly so it remains
fresh and palatable.
• It is very important that birds have clean, cool, fresh water
available at all times.
TECHNICAL RELEVANCE
• Protein meals provide natural sources of essential amino
acids. Additional amino acids are added to balance essential
nutrient requirements.
• Contains essential vitamins and minerals.
• Turkey poults are susceptible to diseases such as
coccidiosis. Medication has been included in this feed to
aid in the prevention of coccidiosis.
VETERINARY CHEMICALS
This feed contains the following veterinary chemical:-
• Lasalocid sodium at the rate of 95 mg/kg.
MEDICINAL CLAIM
Lasalocid sodium is added to this feed for the prevention
of coccidiosis caused by eimeria tenella, E. acervulina, E.
maxima and E. brunetti
.

Silly me, they have dropped the emtryl out of turkey starter ~ thats a problem for turkeys as there is no longer any protection from blackhead. However blackhead is not problem for chickens so you're in good shape.

What brand had the emtryl in it? I rang Riverina and they said they have never had it in their turkey starter and didn't know who did. Did the brand you are talking about also medicate for coccidiosis. Would be interesting to know the full story as to why they removed it

From the APVMA website, executive summary of the report on dimetridazole (trade name Emtryl)

"Registrations and label approvals for products containing dimetridazole are being reviewed as part of the APVMA’s Review Program. The review was initiated in July 2002 because dimetridazole has been withdrawn from use in food-producing animals in several countries, primarily due to unresolved concerns regarding its potential carcinogenicity and uncertainty surrounding the longevity of residues in treated animals. Published reports have indicated that there is a potential for human exposure to residues of dimetridazole in food following the treatment of food-producing animals."

As I mentioned in an earlier post, it seems that there is no toxicological assessment of the the drug using currently acceptable methods of testing. From the report it also appears that there may be residues in food products.

It might be better for you to take a look on the APVMA website to check out who used to put Emtryl in their mixes. Just do a google search on APVMA and Emtryl and a bunch of documents come up.

I had the impression that *all* the manufacturers of turkey feed used to put it in.
