Hello I need to know what is the best age to start feeding sussex chicks normal layer pallets and some full grain? they are 6 weeks or so of age

I feed all my birds the following.
6 weeks on chick starter.
then
6 weeks on grower.
then
then put them on the adult layer mash.

Thanks danny just what I needed, can I ask if you feed your adult stock a full grain at any time or just mash?

You can start them at 5 weeks

just speaking my own opinion of course = I know almost nothing abt Sussex so I am generalising here
not if the breed means the adults are going to grow up to be over 10kg you shouldnt

bantam and smaller breeds 5-6 weeks maybe - remembering that starter has a higher concentrate of the Coccidiosis medicant than the grower
But the large/giant breeds

nope nope nope 9 weeks before you start to introduce grower and extend the grower out to POL - Turkey and Meat bird starter/grower is good for the large/giant breeds - or mix pullet starter/grower 50/50 with the meat bird ones
like I said just generalising and just my opinion

Hi warhammer.
My adults get riverina red label mash which is actually full grain.
Or redhen breeder. Again full grain.
Generally the corn is crushed in the mixes & thats about it.
My game birds & the sussex also get the redhen food that is meant for game birds, figured it couldnt hurt to give a protein boost. Personally I think the red hen range is excellent, google them & have a looksie.
A lot of sussex & game breeders swear by the results.
I know another champion sussex breeder that makes his own mix out of meat meal, mixed grains & lucern I think it was. He doesnt give away the formular but you should see his birds :shock:

As for the starters & growers, everybody will have a different opinion on how long to give each for, I am just following the advice of from the old lady breeder who taught me about all things chooks. God bless her now.

meat meal
Protein 50%
Calcium 10%
Phosphorus 5%
Lysine 2.75%
Methionine 0.55%

Does anyone use red hen layer mix? if you do can you tell me if its any good long term for their health

I use it on and off to be honest I don’t think it’s any different to the other layer mashes available and my girls love it

I use red hen & all my chooks love it. I find it has less of what they don't like and more of what they do. I was using another brand before but I had to throw away too much evey week.
